Hey,
So I really don't understand how the cell phone world in Korea works, but was hoping someone here might enlighten me. I bought a cell phone from another foreigner (who bought it from a guy a while back, but didn't end up activating it) and when I tried to register it they told me that the previous owner hadn't cancelled his/her account.
Is there any way around this? Do all previous owners with accounts have to cancel or can you just walk in and put more minutes on a phone? How might that work?
Thanks for any info. |

you should be able to just put money on it (worked fine for me for SK Telecom/T World)......they might ask you about the name it's registered under (just give the name and say it's you). |

You can just walk in and put more minutes on a pre-paid phone.
Be aware though that not all shops do this. I used to have a KTF phone and of the four KTF locations in my then-town only one was apparently authorized to put minutes on. (Of course it was the one which was the most inconvenient to get to.) At that point the phone was in a friends name (as KTF did not sell phones to E-2's then...don't know if it changed) but I never had any problems putting extra minutes on. You just hand them the money and they take your phone, enter the data on their computer and put on the corresponding minutes. Takes about 5 minutes or so.
Now I go with SK and the phone is in my name and the phone bill is paid monthly by automatic debit. |

Yup, I'm using a pre-paid phone right now. I got it from the guy I replaced when I came here, and he said he got it from the girl he replaced when he came here. I had a couple of problems when I first started going to get it recharged because the phone is actually in some Korean girl's name- they looked at me and said something like "Kim Young-Mi?" I said "no" and had to try to explain to them that it is a hand me down and it now belongs to me. I had to go through this a couple of times at first but now they know me and just recharge it without any more questions. Anyway, you should be able to do it too. If you have any more problems I suggest asking a Korean friend to explain it to them for you. |
