Hi,
I am finishing a 12 month contract and go home soon. I am an Aussie Resident for tax purposes, so must pay tax in Australia. Because I have not paid tax in Korea, ( my first time here and therefore using the 'no paying of tax for two years' ruling) the Korean tax department has no record of my tax and therefore no record of income. They say they cannot give me any income statement.
I work at a public middle school.
For the ATO back home, would the monthly pay slips be enough as proof of my income in Korea?
Would I need something more? I am reluctant to ask for more paperwork as it always causes more work and confusion.
Thanks.

correct me if i thought the purpose of claiming Australian residency for tax purposes was so that you paid tax only on what you earn IN australia, i.e. shares, interest rent on property owned etc, therefore making what you earn out side of Australia irrelevent. I myself was intending to do the same and thereby pay tax only on my managed funds/shares, at a rate of 30c in the $1 for the 1st dollar earnt.....

I can't help but why on earth would you want to pay tax in australia? around 3% in korea vs +20% in australia.

If you spent more than ~330 days in the past year and don't have in major assets in australia you should be fine.

I ran in to trouble the first time I returned to NZ when the tax department asked me to prove that I had paid tax in korea. I simply said that my boss had not paid tax that year (still took it out of my pay tho). They ummed and arhhd asked how much I made overseas. Told them $1 a month while grinning, they laughed and said don't worry about it

try doing the same

Hi,
I hope you are right.
I've copied this from
http://www.ato.gov.au/youth/content.asp?doc=/content/40814.htm

"Australian residents for tax purposes need to declare income they have earned from anywhere in the world in their tax return. Non-residents need only declare income they derived in Australia."

any other feedback welcome.

Hi,
Yes, I am a Resident for tax purposes because I have an abode or house in Australia. If you are unsure about your Residency status, check the Overview page of the web site.
It is all rather confusing I know.

Declare yourself a non-resident NOW. Telephone the Tax Dept in Aussie. Talk to them about it.
