Tragedy struck the New Zealand-born coach of the United States men's Olympic volleyball team in Beijing when his father-in-law was murdered in an attack in Beijing.
Hugh McCutcheon, born and bred in Christchurch, was preparing his gold medal favourite team for their first game tonight when he was told of the killing.
Todd Bachman and his wife Barbara were set upon by a man with a knife when they were visiting a popular tourist spot, the Drum Tower, in central Beijing. Mrs Bachman's injuries are serious and she is fighting for her life in a local hospital.
