Well it's been a while since i posted, but it's that time again. I currently work in a maze of cubicles and feel like a member of the army of the dark lord satan by working here. Luckily, i'm putting in my two weeks notice this upcoming monday (so i get paid for labor day holiday, w00t) and i will be waiting on all my visa paperwork stuff.
Meanwhile, i think i'm going to substitute teach to get a feel for this whole teaching thing. Admittedly, i'm not going to Korea in order to experiance the joy of teaching but am hoping to have a good experiance while getting paid to travel.
Who knows, i might end up enjoying it? Or maybe end up like one of those poor bastard midnight runners. Meh. |

That's too bad. When I started reading your posts several months ago, I was hoping you would be one of the cool ones. What happened to you?
.
The thought occurs to me...if you are not happy where you are (I mean that in the plural sense of 'you') why would you come to a place where so many complain about being miserable and hating the locals? (The answer is: They hated the locals back home, too.) Korea can be a terrific adventure if you let it. If you come with a sour attitude, it will live up to it. Everywhere can do that. Come with a positive attitude and the place can be the adventure of a life-time.
I've only met one person from Mississippi before. He was a truly cool guy. I hope you change your point of view before you get here: There is no success like failure and failure is no success at all. (Dylan) Think about that. |

I don't know, i'm going to keep an open mind. I just didn't go to school to be a teacher, and subsequently have never taught. Obviously, i'm not happy doing what i do and i am willing to give other things a try. I'm going to be optimistic, no matter how many dave's posts i read. Ha! |

I hope you can do that. It's just that I was startled by your comment earlier about 'not coming to Korea to enjoy the joy of teaching'. I'm kind of naive. I have a bad habit of thinking people who take a teaching job actually want to see their students learn. Call me a fool. I know there are jobs here where it is not important if the students learn. However, I'm old-fashioned. I think students should learn from their exposure to a teacher.
I know people get tired of their job, fed up with the office politics, etc, but still, I think anyone who goes into a classroom should have a goal to achieve with the students. If just watching the bank balance grow on payday is all someone is about, then I think there are easier ways to do it. Prostitution comes to mind--desired products are in the neighborhood supermarket, which most are not here. Trivial, yes. However, those things gain in importance when they are not there.
Yes, I'm an old fuddy-duddy. I think a teacher's greatest satisfaction should come from the light in the students' eyes.
Ignore me. |

Just remember the famous words of Buackaroo Banzai (and maybe someone else):
"No matter where you go, there you are....."
Ill-tempered and depressed people I have met here are probably ill-tempered and depressed naturally in their home countries as well. |

Too bad you're not already in Korea. Friday (today) is a paid holiday. Which I wouldn't have known if I didn't have friends who are working since I have the vast majority of the month off already. Yes, I am wallowing in my holiday superiority. |

I was ill-tempered and depressed at home, I am still ill-tempered and depressed in Korea, but less so. I can tell the difference, anyway. |
