Major lawsuit is now in the works against PD Diary
August 07, 2008
Claiming stress, shame and lost business, some 1,000 people plan to join a class-action suit against PD Diary, a Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation investigative reporting program, for airing a flawed report in April on the risks of mad cow disease in U.S. beef.
A Seoul civil court ruled last week that the public affairs program must air corrections on several errors made in its controversial episode on bovine spongiform encephalopathy, known as mad cow disease.
The group Lawyers for Citizens announced yesterday that 1,000 people calling themselves victims of the show, including college students, housewives and workers, will be seeking damages. The program is widely regarded to have been a major driving force behind months of anti-U.S. beef rallies that caused huge disruption.
On Tuesday, the group started collecting signatures on the streets of Seoul in preparation for the class- action suit. It also opened an online room on the anti-candlelight protest Web site, http://cafe.naver.com/nonodemo, in order to recruit plaintiffs.
The group is currently representing 115 owners of small businesses in the Gwanghwamun area, the site of most of the protests, who filed a separate class-action suit last month against the Peoples Conference Against Mad Cow Disease, main organizer of the rallies.
Some of the plaintiffs-to-be said that they have suffered mental stress, headaches, depression and insomnia because of the MBC broadcast.
I became a doubting person and have been stressed out since it became clear that a major broadcasting station lied to the public, said a 36-year-old company worker who only gave the family name Nam. Now, I cant believe anything on MBC.
Several businessmen and workers in the downtown area said they suffered heavy business losses due to the controversial MBC report.
Dozens of street rallies caused by PD Diarys U.S. beef episode disrupted traffic, so I could not fully do my driving work, said a 51-year-old taxi driver who only gave the name Park.
Some traders said they felt severe embarrassment when dealing with firms from other countries. They said many foreign businesspeople jeered at them, saying they couldnt understand why Koreans organized such foolish protests every night.
When I was negotiating with a Filipino buyer in the Philippines, the buyer said Koreans are extremely obstinate and unscientific. The negotiations broke off, said a 55-year-old trader called Park. |
Lying about crap and denying iit...Who does PD Diary think they are, FOX News? This is Korea, homie, not the States. You can get away with being a lying, manipulative and racist news program in the States ( a la O'Reilly Factor) but not here.
I hope the judge bankrupts MBC, but I doubt it'll come to that. What do you think will happen? |

What does FoxNews have to do with a lawsuit against a Korean broadcasting company? |

I guess he is saying that MBC hasn't set any precedent, in our eyes, about deceptive reporting. |

While the wheels of justice turn exceedingly slow, they do turn.
My prediction is that PD Diary will be yanked, re-named and then the same people re-hired for the new version. That's how the political parties behave after an embarrassing failure. |

The Filipino sure got that one right. Not sure winning the lawsuit would change things, but it would help.

Ummm, maybe this is a good thing. Seriously, something good could come out of this if Koreans realize people in authority lie to them, on a regular basis.

How about, "made everything up"?
I haven't seen the program, but there wasn't one shred of truth to the accusations made by the protesters, aside from the fact that three cows in the U.S. tested positive for BSE over about 20 years.
Three cows is not a mad cow epidemic. 186,000 cows, now that is an epidemic. It's quite possible that out of 50 million cows, some BSE cases could arise spontaneously, as does the human counterpart, CJD.
There is no mad cow disease outbreak in the U.S., and never was. That is the correction the show needs to air, and Korea needs to admit.
Unfortunately, for Korea, the damage is done, and won't be undone any time soon.
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2008/08/123_28884.html
That damage is to Korea's image in the world, especially among foreign businesses and investors. In their eyes, this was about how Korea treats foreigners and foreign businesses, and in this case, Korea's closest trading partner, the United States.
Clearly, they see that if Korean politicians and unions can brainwash millions of Koreans into believe total lies, and mobilizing them en masse to torpedo a signed trade deal, what chance do they have of being treated fairly? It's hardly the first time that Koreans have used these tactics against foreigners and foreign businesses. By now, it's a well-worn play book. And so foreign investors have been pulling out of Korea in droves.
In protectionist Korea, trade deals are seen as a one way street: Heads we win, tails you lose. But in the long run, Korea loses. |

Repercussions of what happened with the organization of mad cow protests will ripple through this country for the next 10 - 20 years IMHO. I have no hard statistics to base this assessment on, but by following the news, it appears that the LMB administration is already doing what it can to alleviate the damage. I would predict that the visit by Bush this week is the first in a series of calculated appearances by the Korean government to bring in US officials to help smooth over the damage the North Korean, communist favoring media in this country caused through their deliberate lies and misinformation.
The whole issue was a farce from the very beginning, and it proved out to be just as many had predicted; a well conceived ploy by certain organizations to harm the relationship between the US and South Korea, all in the name of health safety, when there was never any threat to begin with. |

THe cow poo thing happened at a lottemart a few years back. Korea had agreed to allow restricted imports of american beef and as a form of protest some people decided it would be a good idea to throw cow shit at the counter selling US beef in a lottemart. |

I think the content will be forgotten very quickly. I think maybe the government might actually examine it's oversight of protest licenses. That would last some time.....if it were done......nah forget it.... |

The scandalous thing about the whole incident was that the bastards were allowed to just waltz in and create a health hazzard for consumers. Korean farmers seem to have this sense of entitlement that tells them they can do whatever the hell they want. This was evidenced in the anti-WTO protests in Hong Kong a few years ago when they ran amok down there. As long as their cloistered, publicly-subsidized lives are protected, they will continue to feel this way.
Disclaimer, Western farmers are just as bad, but most (bar the French) don't engage in this kind of behaviour. |
