This year, I'm not heading back home, and not getting dental work done in Korea. My dentist back home always warned me about going to a Korean dentist (and against using Korean toothpaste) and apparently they actually have meetings and discuss how bad Korean dentistry is. Anyhow, she pretty much said "never go to a Korean dentist."

However, I'm wondering if anyone here has gone to a good dentist just for the usual teeth-cleaning treatment. I'm looking for western-style, doesn't matter how expensive. Just an actual good place. Any suggestions?

If you want western educated dentists you'll have to look around a bit.
The guy at Chicago Dental Clinic in Kangnam did his advanced training in the US but did basic dental school in Korea. His English is great.

I use Dr. Min Hee Kim but she isn't cheap. She's located in Gangnam.

Looks like Gangnam is the place to go. Thanks. Cool

I tried the Kim Minhee Clinic and although it has an atmosphere similar to a spa, I was a little suspicious when she told me I need an emergency filling for a cavity that's out of control and I should come back every three months for a simple (but expensive) flouride mouthwash treatment for my cavities.

I took it to one of the other US-trained dentists in the Gangnam area (this one by Kyodae, so technically in Seocho) -I randomly went there with my girlfriend that was having work done and thought I'd get a 2nd opinion while I was there- and he said the treatment she recommended has nothing to do with cavities and is just recommended like once a year. It's also usually half as expensive as what she charges. Furthermore he gave me a quick exam and cleaning, told me my teeth are fine and I might need a filling in like six months and didn't charge me a dime. And his English was WAY better than Kim Minhee. I don't remember exactly where he went to school but I do remember being very impressed by the US diplomas on the wall.

imho there's no shortage of decent dentists in Korea. Maybe 20 years ago before people were training overseas it left a lot to be desired, but my WORST experience with a Korean dentist was still obviously highly trained and had a clinic way nicer than anything I've ever seen back home. She was just over-charging by leaps and bounds.

that all being said, I've never had any serious dental problems so take that for what it's worth.

I think your dentist is making wild generalizations about Korean dentistry. I've had 2 root canals done here by 2 different dentists, and I've found them to be of excellent standard. Don't believe the hype, man.
