Hi,
I am due to start working for a public school in Incheon as of October.
I was wondering, is 2 million won a month enough to live and save from?
Thanks,
Oliver |

| You should be able to save about half that, give or take a few hundred depending on your lifestyle, spending habits, etc. |

| Details? Tell us more about this job. You want to make sure you're not settling for second best. Two million sounds low for Incheon. The market is in your favor right now. Second best is for schmucks. |

2.0 sounds alright if you're in a public school in metropolitan incheon... they start off at 1.8 for teachers with just bachelor degrees, like SMOE i believe
OP, make sure you are in fact in incheon city, not in the outskirt regions (i knew a couple of guys last year that got stuck on an island, of course they got extra money for isolation, but i doubt it was worth it in the end) |

If your making 2 mil. You should be taking home about , a little over 1.8 mil.
Then you have other costs like internet and TV- about 40 000 won
If you live in an office tel , the resident fees will be about 70 000 -100 000 won.
To be honest , with the rising inflation and the weak won , 2 mil is a little low.
There are some hogwons that are paying more then 2 mil. I d look into those
My first year was 2001 and I was making 1.9 mil for 100 classes per month.
Korea was much cheaper in those days. |

| In this day and age in Korea, 2 million won/month is garbage. I know of newbies that get at least 2.2 minimum and several that are getting 2.5. The new regulations have put a bit of a stranglehold on the market, so you should be able to get much more than 2 million. Don't accept anything less than 2.2. |

2 mill is enough to live on, but you should be able to find a public job that pays overtime and make about 2.6.
Public school is a better experience than hagwons that'll pay about 2.5. |

2.0 is enough to live on and save (although how much you save will depend on lifestyle factors: how often you go out drinking or for dinner, whether you're buying lots of foreign foods at the market, etc.)
OP, you can do extra classes if you like (if your school doesn't offer, approach them and ask, maybe there's another school within the board that needs an afterschool program). with extra classes you could pull down about 2.3 - 2.4 a month (and still only be teaching 25-26 classes a week vs 30 at a hagwon)

generally speaking, public schools really are a better experience. you'll always run into horror stories here and there, but there are far fewer PS horror stories than hagwon ones.
even if the hagwon seems decent, all you have to do is ask a few specific questions to employees and often you'll find that there's something dodgy happening: no medical being paid, taxes are too high, no pension payments, etc. |

Good move. You should try to avoid the HogPiles anyway. Take one look on this site's help-wanted page and you'll agree that the jobs of last resort are those at the HogWarts. Just how many of those ARE in Korea, anyway? And none seem to be able to keep their help around for very long. I say 'no thanks' to such employers.
Replace a quitter today, BE a quitter tomorrow. That's my take on the HogPiles. |

Good enough to begin with.
If you have a TEFL cert, you will get more. But not much.
In fact if you have a qualification and 20 years experience, speak Korean fluently, and have never taken a sick day in your life...-you'll still get paid roughly the same. |

2 million is about average in these parts (some places pay 1.8 million such as EPIG, while others might 2.5 million, such as some hogwans in Seoul).
Yeah, you can save about half if you don't buy large quantities of foreign booze and don't want to eat out all the time. |
