How nice to see that the police in Korea can relate directly to foreigners.

Sparkled rules!!!

I have to say I've had one serious incident here involving a knife. They had all the evidence, but beecause I wasn't physically harmed they did nothing. Attempted assault, disturbing the peace, and drunk and disorderly don't seem to exist. Oh, and wife battery!!!!!!! Oh, I forgot, damage to property, electrical wires cut.

They are.

So what?

nautilus wrote:

This is taken out of context.

I was unaware that foreigners were involved in so many of Korea's thousands upon thousands of annual traffic accidents. Maybe Korea should contremplate taking our driving licenses away. Problem solved. No more accidents.

It doesn't say 'most traffic accidents'. It's not a case of us versus them. It's advising that foreigners should try and find out more about the Korean traffic system/culture before hitting the roads. That's reasonable.

Well... when traffic accidents run in the tens of thousands annually, the word "many" (to me) connotes a lot. I imagine the reality is that foreigners getting into traffic accidents are a VERY small portion of the total and far from "many". It's simple numbers; we don't have many drivers on the road, so how can we be the cause of many accidents?

Having said that, I wouldn't argue with the word "some" being used.

I certainly agree with the negative responses.

It is as if they already criminalize the "foreigner" before he set foot on Korean soil. In some countries they call that racism (West-Europe for one).

This is beyond ludicrous. First, I would never drive a vehicle in Korea, one of the things I love about living here is the fact that I can walk to work and use public transport to get around (I rarely need to). I should add to this that of all the foreign teachers I've worked with (bout 15), only one used a vehicle, a motorcyle.

Korean traffic culture. It's the only thing I really don't like about Korea. Particularly the taxi cab drivers.

It is not acceptable to run red lights if you're in a vehicle. EVER. Yet I've seen it done thousands of times.

It its not acceptable to illegally park. In L.A. they tow your goddam vehicle or at least put the traffic boot on it so you can't drive it until you pay the fine.

Agressive driving= poor, dangerous driving. Yet many Korean males I talk to think it's "good driving". There's been ample studies on this. When you're driving fast, you're reaction time is decreased. If you're driving with a cell phone on, you're the equivalent of a drunk driver EVEN if you're using a headset.

Driving without your headlights on at night (should be) illegal and is unacceptable. I was almost rundown by a car without its headlights on when I crossed at a marked crosswalk.

And watching TV in your car as you drive. That is bat crap crazy.

I have seen 6 pedestrian traffic accidents (people hit by cars/buses) in the 3 1/2 years I've lived in Korea. 20 odd years living in L.A., traffic capital of the world. ZERO. Yeah a lot less pedestrians, but still. Two of our hagwon students (we had like a total of 60 students as a brand new hagwon) were hit by cars in a single year, and a Korean teacher at a neighboring hagwon was hit by a drunk driver, and died in his trunk as he tried to stash her away and hide the evidence (she would have survived had he taken her to the hospital).

If you're behind the wheel of several thousand pounds of steel, it's not okay to be a jerk, in any country. That crap is just ludicrous, from personal experience (every day I walk to work on steeply sloped, narrow streets with NO sidewalks and taxi drivers that exceed the speed limit - it's a freaking school zone for chrissake).

If you're a Korean reading this rant, I love kimchi, I love go chu chang Smile.

Nothing says "Welcome to Korea" to a foreigner than "Many traffic accidents are caused by foreign workers".

Yeah, getting behind the wheel in Korea is dangerous and yeah, Koreans aren't the best drivers in the world, BUT some of you on here just LOVE to take things out of context. Or maybe, some of you are really just that dumb. Then my advice would be to take a class in reading comprehension.

Congrats to the OP...for getting the whiners on this board riled up again over nothing. Are you guys that bored? Rolling Eyes

Tell me how I am taking "Many traffic accidents are caused by foreign workers"? I have only deleted futher information which reads "Many traffic accidents are caused by foreign workers who do not have a complete understanding of the Korean traffic system or culture".

What context was this meant to be in? Some questions for you.

1. How can many foreigners working in Korea cause traffic accidents? (Perhaps cause the Korean drivings were staring at the foreigners walking down the street)

2. How many foreign drivers are there in Korea?

3. How many actually cause an accident?

4. Do many foreign workers do not understand Korean culture?

5. Is there really a 'Korean traffic system' in this country?

Please answer and provide any evidence that I have taken this out of context.

Many robberies in Ireland are caused by tourists (wandering into dodgy areas).
