There is at least one "Doctor" out there that will support any wacky idea especially if they are getting paid well enough on the lecture circuit to support it. This article proves nothing.

Now, I was telling my brother - who's an engineer - about fan death and he reckoned that if the fan was pretty powerful, it would generate enough air resistance to increase the air pressure in the room, which would - in theory - prevent the lower pressure air outside the room from entering. Hence, once the oxygen in the room had been consumed, it would not be replaced. Hence, DEATH. But he conceded that it was highly unlikely.

I still don't believe it. I'm no scientist, but I think there are a myriad of factors involved in these instances where the fan is the suspected culprit. The 'victims' probably had other serious health issues that contributed to their death.
I just cannot believe that Korea is the only place affected by this strange happening. There are plenty of countries in hotter parts of the world that use fans all year round and so far, no fan-deaths recorded.

In a previous life, I was an aircraft technician, and I got my degree in aeronautical engineering. So, I have some understanding of fluid mechanics, blah, blah.

Fan death is im-fukking-possible.

It's a retarded myth used to explain mysterious deaths. "We have absolutley no idea how your grandmother died, so we'll just attribute it to fan death."

It seems reasonable, but how has this idea actually been tested? Have any experiments been devised related to fans and hyperthermia? Have any reliable statistic been collected? So far it's just one smart guy speculating and proposing that it's possible (so don't take the chance).

The point is also that the general public is afraid of fans, and this is irrational paranoia.

What is the real calculated risk of fan death? How many fan death are reported each year? Out of those cases, how many times has a causal relationship to fans been demanstrated as the most likely cause of death (as opposed to choking on vomit, an unrelated heart attack etc.). How many people use fans? On how many days each year do they use those fan? What percent of those people use fans without an open window? How often? How close are those fans to the body?

How does that risk compare to other inherant risks we take each day? For example, how many people are seriously injured or killed each year from the side mirrors on city buses (I've heard several stories about that). How many people die from choking on SamGyupSal?


Nobody even considers, what are the calculated risks of opening the window for improved circulation. Opening the window may expose the individual to [yellow] dust, pollution, carcingenic insecticide, or disease carrying insects. How is opening the window linked to respiratory infection? Also, opening the window many even expose someone to night
noises that interfer with much need rest/sleep that the body needs for immune response; raising the probability of infection.

Like mad cow disease, and women taking taxis at night, fan death is media sensationalism. The general population is not educated to be skeptical and consider everything in context,and with statistics.

That is why the whole thing is so rediculous. It may rarely (or not) affect the elderly, but the entire population (ever age group) sees it as a risk. In a world full of risks, even if this phenomenon is real, it may not even be worth considering until more important threats to the elderly
controlled and managed. Unless someone is very old, and has a heart condition, we can still continue to laugh it off.
