Was there ever a time when Coke did NOT taste better than Pepsi?

My socks are still on but they do stink.

I can still remember when a close friend casually mentioned, and it was like 20+ years ago, that he preferred Pepsi to Coke.

That kinda put me into a momentary daze, time slowed right down, "Pepsi tastes better than Coke?". I don't think I knew what to do with that information; I suppose it'd be, for a Korean, as if a foreigner here said that he/she preferred ketchup to kimchi - so outlandish as to be inconceivable (never mind the actual merits of either).

I hadn't, until that moment, realized that some actually prefer Pepsi; I guess I saw it, without it ever needing to be said, as a choice you might make only when Coke had sold out.

(And if there are any Coke distributors reading this, I'd be glad to turn this into a short story. But it'll cost you... Laughing )

I remember in the UK about 10 years ago Pepsi did a 'Pepsi Challenge' roadshow where they went to major cities and asked you to blindly drink two cola beverages, one being Coke and one being Pepsi. I don't know the results but they must have been pretty confident that their product was better.

Actually being the connoisseur of soft drinks that I am, I've got one better.

In Korea I drink Coke, when I go home I drink Pepsi.

Pepsi in Korea tastes like Coke in the US, that is like crap (and for the record, no I haven't tasted crap).

In Korea, it actually did once. Several years ago, when the Coca-Cola Co. refused to renew the license of their Korean distributor (I think it was the "Bumyang Co."), they were officially without a presence in Korea. Their old distributor, IIRC, went on to found a rival cola company (8.15 Cola) and Pepsi quickly jumped in and grabbed a big chunk of the cola market. People grabbed up the remaining supplies of Coke and there was a time when it was hard to find it anywhere. Pepsi took over vending machines all over where Coke once reigned.
