I just got a new job with a Uni here, and need to get my background check apostile (which is kinda like a special notary I guess). I already had the background check sent to me, and so have it in hand here. My recruiter talked to his friend at immigration who said they could do that at the US embassy, though I called them this morning and they said that it had to be done Stateside.
This seems like a common case of noone knowing really what's going on exactly, so I was wondering if anyone here had gotten something apostile while here in Korea of if it was necessary to have sent that way already from back home.
I know tomorrow's the holiday, so I can't do much about it, though I was curious anyway as the job starts in 2 weeks so time is somewhat of the essence.
Cheers,
Kevtron

Instead of the apostile (since you are here and not at home) you need to go to your embassy here in Korea and swear an affidavit of authenticity and attach that to the background check.

ttompatz is dead on.

You cannot get a apostille at the U.S. Embassy.

You can execute an affidavit before a consular officer swearing to the authenticity of your background check at the U.S. Embassy. Korean Immigration will accept this affidavit in lieu of an apostille.

Check the sticky thread entitled "GUIDE: AUTHENTICATING A BACKGROUND CHECK FROM WITHIN KOREA" for more details on how to go about this.

Two questions Kevtron....

1. Is this your first time coming to work in Korea on an E2 visa?

2. Has your employer verified your university credentials through the Korean Council for University Education?

If you answered yes to question 1...and no to question 2.....then you should not consider getting your embassy affidavit in Korea.

You should absolutely get your apostille.

I'm assuming you haven't performed your consulate interview...because you don't have your visa issuance number yet...because you haven't mailed your documents.

You're leaving in two weeks???? You'll need the KCUE verification....PM me for more info if you have the ability...if you don't go through the KCUE...you won't make that flight.

Apparently I'm a little slow today...

Sorry Kevtron...I didn't realize you were in Korea.

Go to the embassy!!!!!!!!

Read the sticky here titled "Authenticating a background check from within Korea."

It'll give you everything you need to know....sorry I'm dumb!!!

could the background check be a color copy or does it have to be the original?

It needs to be whatever YOUR embassy will accept and allow you to swear to.

Only they can answer your question but I suspect that they will want an original.
