I have two characters living inside me. One likes to get drunk all the time, eat heaps of crap food, smoke and live like a maniac. The other 6 months of the year I like to eat health food, meditate and look after myself. So I thought I would start a thread about ways to be healthy in korea. I have just come out of a period of drinking and smoking and now I am starting into the healthy phase. This weeks suggestion is to go to E-mart and try some of the organic products. I am also thinking that all this white rice we eat here is quite bad for our health.

Why is white rice bad for your health? I can't stand the other kind with beans and other crap, yuck.

I concur. I feel horrible and bloated after eating it and feel lethargic within an hour or two of finishing it.

I think eating white rice is like eating white bread. Most of the good stuff has been taken out and it acts like empty calories. I have lost 15 pounds after taking white flour and white rice out of my diet. Seeing all the fat white people on my vacation this month was a big a big wake up call for me. I am fat but I saw so many people that were way bigger than me.

White, refined rice is basically filler that has very little nutrional value other than breaking down almost immediately into sugar. Nice if you're doing field work, but if you're just a teacher/office worker, it's like a massive sugar rush and a massive down-period. It has no fiber to speak of, so it doesn't even help your stomach process what you just ate.

It's usually enriched with Vitamins (at least in the US it's required by law), but enrichment has been shown to be questionable, nutrionally, compared to simply eating the rice with the natural vitamins.

im lucky my hagwon gives me a massive meal during the day, always full grain brown rice, all veg is grown on site and meat only includes pork or fish. shame thats the only positive thing about the place but still, all i need is a small breakfast and a sandwich or kimbap for dinner.

never had any problems with eating white rice though, perhaps your body just gets used to eating shite, lets face it white rice isnt that bad, far better than chips or whatever and your body does require some carbs

cant say i feel healthy, im a chain smoker and last week i was in seoul so all i ate was take away food and drank every night, still recovering

Absorption rates for supplements are often pitiful. It takes a bit of research to even know what can be properly absorbed. For example, mixing milk with tea makes it hard to absorb the good parts of tea or the calcium in the milk. Another fun fact: crushed eggshells have a higher absorption than many pills do.
