My mate and I were discussing this topic last night, and though both of us have been here for a while, neither could come up with a real answer. Does one need an F-visa to secure a tenure track position at a university? |

No. Just look at the recent SNU hires. Of course, some of them do have Noble Prizes! |

No, because you turn around and apply for the professors visa. I forget what they call that. |

YES, an F visa is required for a tenure track position.
An E1 visa, visiting professor, is for a maximum of 2 years.
Under current immigration law a foreigner (non F-visa) cannot hold a permanent position as a university professor.
E-1 Status (Professors)
A. The Object of Visa Issuance
This category applies to foreigners who, as qualified individuals specified by the Educational Law, wish to instruct special fields of study or engage in the guidance of research at junior colleges or higher educational institutions, or the institutions corresponding to such levels.
* In the case of a national or a public University, a foreigner is not permitted to be a full-time professor.

ttompatz, you seem to be knowledgable about these things, I have an E1, and it says on my passport it's only good for one year? I guess there's two versions of the visa? |

Perhaps I should clarify.... an E1 can be UP TO 2 years... depending on your contract. If you have a 1 year contract you get a one year visa. |
