More and more, I see Koreans walking around with these necklaces with their names on them and now I think it's a good idea for a gift.

I wonder if anyone knows somewhere I can go to order one and then pick it up later.

I'd rather avoid ordering one from the internet if possible due to having no credit card and having mail and/or boss trust issues.

.... don't women usually make handmade name necklaces in craft class or something?

Handmade necklaces were popular during my high school years... There were even those necklaces with people's names written on grains of rice.

They are available in Namdaemun, look around in the accessories areas. There is also a small jeweler near the KFC in Itaewon who can make them. I think it would be cool to have someone's name transliterated into Korean and make it. Could suck though depending on how well it translates. Not that they'll ever know! Might also be better for longer names, as one Korean character isn't likely to make a very pretty necklace.

I think most jewelry shops will make them nowadays.

I like them. They make every girl look like a racing girl.

Sorry, I should have been clearer on this.

I'm talking about the gold necklaces that have romanized letters serving as the pendant itself (also gold).
Usually with Korean names spelled in English (Such as Ji-hyun).

These are certainly not handmade and probably have to be ordered well in advance of completion. And I'm guessing they're not cheap either.

I hope the previous replies were with these necklaces in mind as I'm going to set out on a mission for this as part of my long weekend.

I got mine in Jong-no. As you walk out of the main drag of Insadong and come to the big intersection (Tapgol Park with the pagoda on the left) turn right. I think there's a big Giordano store on the corner but I may be wrong. That entire street is lined with jewellery stores and a whole lot of them offer the necklaces. I don't remember where exactly I got mine because those stores all look the same and I didn't take down the name.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I think it will.
How long did it take and how much did it cost? (if you don't mind my asking)

I had mine made at the gold jewelry counter at EMart about 5 years ago. It cost around W200 000 because I chose a thicker neck chain and the letters are thicker. I suggest you try EMart in your area.

Almost any jeweler is correct. If they can't make it, they'll bring it in.

I paid 180,000 2 years ago for white gold.

It was gift from my husband, and he can't remember but says it was between 100 000 and 150 000 won (white gold) and he picked it up a week later, but it could have been ready earlier.

The store assistants are all terribly keen to make a sale and even if they speak no English at all they will bend over backwards to communicate with you.
