My recruiter emailed me; she said I didn't have to pay into my pension with upcoming job. Is this legal? I'm Irish and won't benefit from the pension in any case. |

I'm guessing that it's not a legal requirement that the employer is liable for 50% of these fees? |

in that circumstance, you would be liable only for your share. But if you worked for 5 years without paying into the pension, that would be quite a large sum of money. |

Don't trust that recruiter. They are encouraging you to accept a position with a hagwon that refuses to pay into the pension, and, therefore, breaks the law. |

The employer must pay into the pension fund. That indeed is the law.
If an employer is willing to break the law over this, what else will he dodge? He may not pay your insurance, either. And when he takes taxes out, he may pocket that instead of paying it.
Where would he stop? |

Your recruiter appears to be right.
Heres news on the recent agreement Ireland signed with Korea: www.welfare.ie/press/pr07/pr311007.pdf
Heres a pertinent sentence:
The Agreement also provides that Irish employees who are posted to work for their company in the Republic of Korea for up to five years, may continue to pay insurance contributions under Irelands social security system instead of becoming liable for contributions in the Republic of Korea.
How that plays out in the details, I'm not sure. Probably a good idea to check with your consulate.
[South Africans also should not be paying pension contributions.]

The exemption is for Irish employees of IRISH companies doing business in Korea, NOT Irish citizens working as employees of a Korean employer.

As you have probably read, many people on this forum are saying that not paying into your national pension is illegal. I would use caution as your recruiter and/or school has shown a willingness to deceive you.
Make sure you have health insurance provided by your school. You don't want to be without that (in case of an emergency or something). Plus, it's illegal for your school not to provide (at least a full timer) health insurance. |

If your prospective school is skirting the law before it hires you, anticipate more problems in the future. |
