Quote:
CHICAGO - Bernie Mac, the actor and comedian who teamed up in the casino heist caper Oceans Eleven and gained a prestigious Peabody Award for his sitcom The Bernie Mac Show, died Saturday at age 50.

Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital, his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles.

Quote:
Recently, Macs brand of comedy caught him flack when he was heckled during a surprise appearance at a July fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate and fellow Chicagoan Barack Obama.

Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine, Mac joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language. The performance earned him a rebuke from Obamas campaign.

It's shocking how someone can die so young. The article said that he had sarcoidosis, though I know very little about it. I didn't watch the Bernie Mac show, but saw him in quite a few good movies.

What's shocking is how the mainstream media is not reporting the likely cause of the death (AIDS). In an era where black men and women in the US are the fastest growing HIV/AIDS victims its shocking that this is being glazed over, this has the potential to be a Rock Hudson type moment for the black community in America.

Yes, it IS shocking that someone in this day and age can die from sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is one of those "orphan" diseases that there is not enough funding for. Sarcoid attacks the lungs, extremeties and the eyes. It's an auto-immune disease, in which the body's cells attack other cells in the body.

What do doctors know about sarcoid? Virtually nothing. They don't know how it's transmitted or how a person gets it. Some think it comes from pine pollen, others have other ideas about it.

When I read that Bernie Mac had died of "complications from pneumonia", my first thought was "I bet he had sarcoid".

How do I know so much about this disease? I had it myself about 20 years ago. There are two types of sarcoid, one that you can get over within a year or two (which fortunately I had), or the other type which is a chronic condtion.

I don't know which kind Bernie Mac had, but the reason for his weight gain has to do with the fact that the treatment consists of taking steriods.

The more recent post was a valuable post, but the issue here I think is the fact that you don't really keep sarcoidosis a secret if you have it. It's not going to cost you a job, it's not going to force you to stay in a bubble etc.

But if it's part of a larger problem, such as HIV/AIDS then you're far more likely to keep it quiet, and have the low key, played down, surprising death announcement as was the case with Mac.

That said, I don't know what happened, that's just how it seems to me. I also hope he didn't have AIDS.

I would say he didn't have HIV/AIDS as he was married to one wife for 20 some years (I think 23). Married guys take AIDS fairly seriously since they don't want to give it to their wives AND they don't want their wives to find out they were cheating!

If you saw the Larry King special about him, he sounded like a pretty straight guy.

WTF does that mean? Straight people don't get HIV? Are you serious?

Two words: Magic Johnson.

All kinds of people who contract HIV are nice, innocent, good people. Seriously, what's wrong with you.

I'll refer back to your first post. This is an illness that you say gets no funding, and isn;t really researched. Now a famous guy is dead from it, and he had lots of famous friends. No website to my knowledge has been set up to donate money to the cause. None of these very famous friends (the cast of the Oceans movies, for instance) are stepping up saying let's raise money for research.

He may not have had HIV/AIDS, but the way this has played out makes me think otherwise. And if I'm interpreting you're comment about him being straight correctly, then you are the very problem/reason that he kept quiet about his illness.

I don't think she was referring to his sexual orientation but just meant he didn't sleep around.. not the cheating type. As in a straight-up kinda guy.

Personally I have no idea.

edit: added "she" to my first sentence.

just caught the end of the larry king thing.

I'm thinking that it was just one of the worst handled PR jobs I've ever seen, and he did the disease/cause a dis-service by remaining silent.

Not at all sure why they would have thought this was the best way to handle things, but I guess he was just a very private person.

Of COURSE I wasn't referring to his sexuality.....sheesh!!!!

The reason Larry King didn't mention it much was because he didn't have a clue about sarcoid! He didn't even know how to pronounce it until one of the guests told him. If Larry King doesn't know something, you can bet that not many other people know about it either!!

I actually wrote to CNN asking LK to do a program on sarcoidosis. Maybe then the funding will come to find a cure for it.
