|
|
Watching the news this morning, and they show the Olympic Medal Tally.
This is what was on the news
1. China
2. USA
3. Korea
7. Japan
13. North Korea
No mention of 4, 5 or 6 (Germany, Italy, Australia)
well that's ok, no drama.
BUT of course Japan at 7th spot must be mentioned, because, it's not about sportmanship, and excellence, its all about beating those nasty Japanese.
Many of us regard the Korean media as pathetic. I wonder why? |

I tend to agree with komerican, oddly enough. The Olympics are mostly about nationalism anyway. Why else would people be so interested in a bunch of marginal sports they couldn't care less about the rest of the time. The Korean team is doing well. Don't begrudge them their moment in the sun. |

Is it kind of silly to root for anyone besides your teammates. Rooting for a team because they live in the same political borders some army conquered and "walled" up seems so arbitrary. Why not root for a team based on race or perhaps based on height (I'll root for team with the most people above 6'1")?
I wish the Olympics could just simplify it down to regions, not nations and host them at the same place, maybe on some compound on international waters, every time. The Olympis always bankrupt the local economies while the corporate sponsors make off like bandits. It's also a time of extreme repression. You can look at Mexico City 1968 and compare it to now with the ruling party's actions in China (calling them "Communist" seems quite silly, authoritarian capitalism is what they are now). The rounding up of dissidents, unionists, journalists, environmentalists, homosexuals, students, kidnapping and relocation of homeless people, destruction of public housing, buying 100,000s of CCTV cameras from General Electric (owner of NBC, btw), etc. The list goes on.
All I care about is a good game. The baseball game last night was fun to watch, for example, and I'm really not upset that Korea won. Well I am upset, but only because I have to listen to the whole town simultaneously orgasm every time Korea scores another win or another gold medal. |

The crappy media in this country will try to play up the South Korea versus Japan thing. Then if Japan wins more medals I expect them to say that South Korea + North Korea won more medals and if it weren't for the Japanese, we'd be united, blah blah blah... |

the funny part is its also asian-centric.
While China has more gold medals, the US leads in the overall medal count. |

No... but technically we're still tied for 41st place... with the other 30 or so countries who haven't won anything.
Respek Canadian ex-pats and put Canada on the list... here, here!

I would have taken you as a Canadian talking about the summer games until baseball came up.....
National pride is nothing to be afraid of! It's part of national identity! If you get gloating rights over someone else, so be it! That's what college football season is all about! |
