Sin, When Viewed by Scripture Light

Like a fish, my soul mistook
Saw the bait, but not the hook

Dylan Thomas's "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Goodnight"

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Self explanatory

you mean Rodney Dangerfield DIDN'T make that poem himself? Sad

I remember seeing BARCELONA on dvd, and the scene with Chris Eigeman's positive affirmations keeps popping up from time to time:

"Everyday, in every way, I become a better and better Lieutenent, Junior Grade..."

Chris Eigeman- the name you never heard of, but the face you've always seen. And think Matthew Perry must have a new movie.

I had a friend who lived by that in college. Except I don't think he always had to..... he wanted to, though.

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle--Plato

Thou shouldst eat to live; not live to eat.--Socrates

Do not consider painful what is good for you.--Euipides

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

'I get down on my knees and do what must be done
And kiss Achilles' hand, the killer of my son.'

by Michael Longley 'Ceasefire'

Quote:
I remembered her head bent towards my head,
Her breath in mine, our fluent dipping knives--
Never closer the whole rest of our lives.

By Seamus heaney in 'Clearances'

They inspire me because they remind me of where i'm from(ceasefire) and my mother(clearances), two things that are important to me and have shaped me.

Some stuff that runs through my head daily and keeps my spirits up.

"Don't give it a thought. I changed everything."
WC Fields in The Bank Dick

"You're already dirty."
Bill Murray to John Candy in Stripes

"And he [Elisha] went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them."
II Kings 2:23-24

That used to be my signature. I had it attributed to Philo. A google search attributes it to both Plato and Philo. Not important, but curious.

"Be drunk, always. Nothing else matters; this is our sole concern. To ease the pain as time's dread burden weighs down upon your shoulders and crushes you to earth, you must be drunk with respite......Drunk with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you please...But be drunk."
-Baudelaire

"Once when Kerouac was high on psychedelics with Timothy Leary, he looked out the window and said, 'Walking on water wasn't built in a day.' Our goal was to save the planet and alter human consciousness. That will take a long time, if it happens at all."
-Allen Ginsberg

"...because too many wait in line
for their government issued spines and
recline in La-Z-Boys, that
reflect their motivations towards life.
Avation, IS a possibility!
Spread your dreams and let them fly..." -- some slam poet

I believe, if we take habitual drunkards as a class their heads and hearts will bear in advantageous comparison with those of any other class. There seems ever to have been a proneness in the brilliant and warm blooded to fall into this vice.
~Abraham Lincoln

Of course, I have also memorized the poem "The Road Less Traveled".

Just thinking about this story every now and then should help put things in perspective. Shocked
