so today I went to buy train tkts to go to Gwangju from Seoul for the biennale during Chuseok (but it's until November if you are interested) and there weren't any train tkts available - not for Friday the 12 or Sat the 13th - so if any of you were still thinking of going somewhere - you might just be SOL - sorry.
and for any newbies - don't even THINK about taking a bus - really - the delays and traffic are maybe 3-4 times normal. |

It's a nightmare, especially the first and last days everyone is off. |

I've been caught out on the middle day too, five hours from Andong to Daegu. This year it will be even worse because there are only three days (Sat, Sun, Mon). |

except of course if you don't live in Seoul it's a great time to visit the city because all the traffic will be going in the opposite direction. many shops/stores may not be open but there's still plenty to do and see for anyone looking to visit the capital during the holiday.
another reason why i enjoy living on the beach...don't have to deal w/ city traffic. |

Second that- my favorite thing to do over Chuseok is going to Gangnam. You can walk with your arms oustretched and jay walk across the main street because there are so few people and cars. |

simple: board the train without a ticket and lock yourself in the toilet no ticket needed... however, this is best done with shorter rides, like daegu to busan... |

Crap...I realized my flight home is on the last day of Chuseok, the Monday of Sept. 15th. But I will be going in the opposite direction: Jeonju to Seoul. My flight's in the evening and I was planning to take the bus early in the day to Incheon. But am I better off (is it less risky) to take the KTX or something? I almost missed my flight the last time I flew during Chuseok because I was stuck on a three+ hour bus ride from Gangnam to Incheon (should have taken an hour or less). |

You need a ticket before you can even get on the train, then use it again when exiting the platforms area. |

Not at Dongdaegu, CheonanAsan or Seoul stations you don't, not that I recommend traveling without a ticket. |

you are screwed. if you have your flight ticket you should have gotten a train or bus ticket as soon as you knew what day you were flying. going to seoul on monday? yeah, along with 20 million others. |

first of all, there is no KTX from Jeonju - but there are buses, including airport buses. there are trains but they are slow and book up on regular weekends, can't imagine there are any tkts available for Chuseok.
don't know what time your flight is, but you might want to find out what time the FIRST bus leaves - as in 4 a.m.? and take that one - buying a tkt in advance, of course - if possible - wouldn't put it past them to tell you that you can't.
for info on where the airport bus stops call 063-1330 (tourist info for Jeonju) or if there's no one available in E call 02-1330 and tell them your problem.
Jeonju is one of the worst areas hit by traffic over Chuseok because there are so many uni's there and again, NO KTX so people have to take the bus.
if I were you I'd leave the day before, as early as possible and spend the night at a hotel near the airport.
good luck. |

KTX doesn't serve Jeonju, but it does serve nearby Iksan.
You'll still have to take an airport bus from Seoul Station (or Gwangmyeong) to Incheon, however. |

Strange things are open or closed during Chuseok.
Convenience stores usually close while the subway runs, (Sunday/holiday schedule). Costco closes early the day before Chuseok and the day of Chuseok. |
