I invest on my own with my Charles Schwab account. My primary checking is also with them. I earn a variable interest rate in my checking as well. It is somewhere around 3% at the moment I think, but I haven't checked it in a while. The bonus is that there are no fees to take out money. Money can easily be transfered between the brokerage account and checking.

I know it is possible to do that, but did you open it abroad, in other words does the U.S. government know about it? I want the U.S. out of my teaching money.

I opened it on the internet. The documents and card were sent to my home address. It was quite simple actually.
