Just how open to contract negotiation are recruiters/bosses? For instance, I wonder whether they'd bite if I offered to take care of my own airfare in exchange for concessions elsewhere in the contract, e.g. 100% paid health insurance or another couple of days off or something? Do you vets out there think something like that is possible, or is the answer liable to be something like, "Eat a fat one, round-eye. Sign or begone!"?

Has anyone been able to manipulate terms of his/her contract?

I would never begin a contract here by offering concessions. That is likely to be seen as "Aha, let's see what ELSE we can get out of him".

State what you want and THEN let them bargain you down on the less important points.

As for your example above, I'd rather have cash in hand than a vague promise of time off in the future...Korean bosses tend to conveniently forget such things/claim a misunderstanding of what the contract says. If they are not willing to negotiate, then that gives you a pretty fair impression of how you will be treated during your time there. If they can't be bothered BEFORE you sign, how much less inclined will they be to treat you right AFTER they have your name on the dotted line?

Airfare repaid in full, pension and health insurance 50% and vacation 10 days not including weekends. That at a minimum is what you should go for. If the rumors are true and they are going to bring over lower-paid workers to do our jobs, then we should get what we can while the going is good.
