I'll confess, I'm not a huge follower of the Olympics. I watch it every couple of years, and generally remember how many medals were won and how many Canada won.

Before I came here, I thought that a gold medal was an excellent achievement and very hard to come by. Now I know better. Canada sent a huge number of athletes to the events, eclipsing the number of Korean and Japanese athletes (I believe) and yet Canada hasn't won one medal in anything.

Can someone explain this to me? I always thought Canadian olympians excelled in the Olympics.

Our goal is to finish second in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Just think...It will be the first gold medals we will win on Canadian soil. Smile

I think we put all our money into the Winter Olympics.

Even Togo has a bronze medal. Wink

One thing I gotta say here: I don't think Canadian athletes suck. Quite a few of our athletes who have not won gold but finished top 10 have won or placed in recent international events. Why they didn't they perform as well at this olympics? Who can say.

I don't want Canadian Olympians to feel bad for not winning a medal. So long as they tried their best, I don't care.
The Olympics are just one sporting event that's overblown.
There are other events that Canadians have done very well at so why get all paranoid at now?

That's true; Americans do that. Real Canadians put 'Rush' patches on their backpacks.

we're medaling in rowing, kayaking, softball ... spring and summer sports in my part of Canada

what's the problem?

a country of thirty million mostly winter sport people

the results are reflective

the ONLY surprise is that there isn't a bronze or silver somewhere in the swimming pool

Canadian and American athletes make millions of dollars playing in leagues like MLB. They're not allowed to compete in the Olympics.

When people think "Yay Korea beat USA at baseball" all that means is that they beat the people who couldn't get paid to do the job.

Plus Canada does very well at the winter Olympics.

So the only reason Canda sucks is because we concentrate on Winter Sports.

Ahh give me a break! It comes down to MONEY.

About the money check this article out.

Also culture helps. In America they hold their athletes up and in a sense worship them. In Canada we just shrug are shoulders.

It can not be the people we sent 331 atheletes. You would think the odds are we get something a bronze at the least.

We do not spend the money to train or help the athletes we send.

And please stop giving us the tired hackneyed crap of "it does not matter who wins or lose as long as you play the game." The olympics do not give a gold medal for "Sportsmanship"

The only guy from my high school to ever throw the discus farther than me just today missed out on an Olympic medal by a single centimeter in the shot put.

Nice to know that if I'd applied myself and dedicated a decade to it I still wouldn't have medaled in it Wink ... Though he is the Canadian national champion. That's something, in terms of personal accomplishment. And he did set a personal and national best.

People make too much of medaling.
