SAN ANTONIO The San Marcos police chief has reprimanded an officer who kept a couple waiting 20 minutes for a speeding ticket even as they pleaded to be allowed to take a dying dog to an emergency veterinary clinic. |
People are giving this officer death threats now. I think maybe he was somewhat insensitive but I'm sorry the cop was right to pull these people over and ticket them. When it comes to choosing between the life of a pet and putting other humans in danger by driving in an unsafe manner, you choose human safety. |

But why did he take 20 minutes? |

If the officer wanted to give a speeding ticket, he could do it much faster if a dog's life is at risk, but the officer either didn't care or didn't know the dog would die. It is possible some police officers who have dogs were upset with their comrade. I would be. |

You can't discount the possibility that the cop was simply being vindictive. I've had about 50/50 experience with police officers, half really believed in the job and did what they thought was right, the other half were on a power trip. |

The ticket was for speeding, not reckless driving. |

I don't know about taking 20 minutes to write a ticket - that seems excessive. But death threats to the officer? It was just a @#$%$#$ dog.
Let's pick something important, shall we? |

This is why:
Quote: |
Police Chief Howard Williams said Tuesday that Officer Paul Stephens received an oral reprimand, watched a video of the incident with his supervisor and was told how to improve his performance.
Williams, though, said he believed Stephens' claim that the teacup poodle, Missy, was already dead when he pulled over Michael Gonzalez and Krystal Hernandez.
"This dog was already dead," Williams told the San Antonio Express-News. "That is one of the reasons the officers showed no urgency. Nothing the officers did or said caused this dog to die." |

Ummm. Could you highlight the part where I said reckless driving? Speeding is unsafe and puts humans at risk. Hence it is driving in an unsafe manner.

Why did the pet owner put human lives at risk and risk being stopped by the police when speeding? The owner didn't think speeding might involve him being pulled over by the cop and having to waste precious time? The owner didn't think he was putting humans at risk?
Sorry, I lay the blame at the owner's feet, unless you could show me the dog would have lived if the owner could only save the dog's life by driving 50 mph vs 35 mph. Even then, the driver is now putting human lives at risk. Sorry, I will take the life of a child crossing a street over a guy trying to rush his dog to the vet. As a mother, I'm not sure why you can't make that simple calculation. |

I'm not in a good mood right now, but I think you're being a total *beep*. Do you see many children playing on the roads after midnight where you live? Where did I say I approved of speeding? I didn't so **** off.
Edited for good manners.

Speeding is reckless driving in my book. The car was going 90 miles an hour. In a city. I don't care what time of day or night it was. That is reckless. |

Indeed. The officer saved a human life. He should be given a medal. |

It's summer, no? I was certainly out after midnight when I was young. Maybe not as a 5 year old but as a young teen I can remember walking home many a summer august evenings after a long night of D&D at a friend's. Anyway, I said A man. Not THE man. I do not believe this man is a unique case. Pet owners need to get a grip. It's a dog. Not a human. Putting any humans life at risk at any time of day or night is simply wrong and only puts both dog and man at risk. Man at risk from unsafe driving. The pet at risk from being pulled over for speeding and being delayed.
Get some perspective. It's a dog. |

Sad story. Cop should have given a police escort and then a ticket. Of course, the serve part of protect and serve has gone out of style. Cops aren't usually nice people. |

You might have missed the part where the cop says he was under the impression the dog was already dead. Frankly, the guy should have got back in the car and driven the speed limit to the vet and the cop should have gone back to pulling over other idiot speeders. |
