Yet another cherry picked video- they don't show the people
who know maps or history- used to show that "all Americans
dumb".
Most people in the world, don't know anything about geography
and little about history. However, there are a bunch of these
videos out there that specifically target Americans as being the
dumb ones.
The major question is do you really feel that knowledge of
geography is essential?
I really, really like studying geography as it was part of my major.
I know whole f***ing lot about it. However, I am really starting to
agree with most people in the world that it is not an essential skill.
I know a lot about geography, but it doesn't increase my paycheck,
it doesn't put food on my table, it doesn't lengthen my life span,
etc. It mostly serves as trivia.
A lot of people get a kick out of the "Americans are dumb because they don't know where (insert place name here) is on the map" gags.
Fine, but ignorance of geography is not a uniquely American feature. |

| Ugh this is embarrassing but the ppl they were talking to did not look that intelligent to me. You can edit anything to make it look like everyone in "said" country is stupid. The correct answer as to who we should invade next? NO ONE! |

| It's pretty easy to find idiots in certain parts of the country or in certain parts of town. If you want to make a video, it's not that hard. I'm sure you could do the same in any other country you like. |

| Hmm... hard to believe anyone over the age of 20 would not know the general location of Australia, or recognize the shape and size of it, but apparently quite a few adults don't. |

You'd swear these Americans were paid actors. |
It's hard to believe the good ol' USA is the stronest country in the entire history of the planet.....
But it is!
So what bastion of the intellectual elite do you come from? |

There are beautiful beaches on both coasts just 30km from within South Auckland, NZ. Yet, there are South Auckland children, eight/nine years old, who have never been to the coast nor beach.
My own children have flown around different countries. We have world maps on the walls at home. They watch TV then go to the map and pinpoint places like Azerbijan.
My guess is knowledge of places in the World stems back to the early development years. Children will share in their parents' interests. |

This is a video from a comedy show, it is entirely staged.
"it's cherry picked"
"they look like nascar fans"
trolled. Even the Americans in this thread accepted it as real, and said "well I'm not like that, it's the others". I rate the OP as 5/10. It was a poor effort, but it was successful and the thread as a whole gets 8/10 from me. It could have done with a few more patriotic American responses. |

Here is my favorite geography question that nobody from any country knows the answer to:
How many countries are there? |

I think there is no definite answer to this. There are too many ways to define a country. Is the UK one country or four? The problems with the question carry on. What about disputed territories?
Is it really surprising that nobody know the answer to an answer-less question? |

Okay, here is a better geography question:
How many countries are members of the UN?
The point is that people are clueless.
Also, the UK isn't a country. It's a Kingdom. |

Kingdoms have little to do with what is a country or not. They're pretty meaningless these days.
Whilst it's not always correct, wikipedia agrees with me.

The CIA world fact-book also agrees with the UK being a country. That's good enough for me. Where did you get the impression that it wasn't a country? Would you count Sealand as a constituent of the UK, an individual country or nothing?
Edit:
I think you'll find that members The United Nations are nations and not countries. LOL |
