Has anyone else seen them? Who is Seotaiji? I have the wikipedia page here, but can anyone who else fill in more info about this performer?

Probably the most influential Korean band/group of my generation ('84). The pop music you see today is pretty much the fruit of Seo Taiji's innovation and attempts to break the mold of the Korean music industry.
They were controversial (spoke out against the government), brought new music into the scene (hip-hop when trot was dominant in Korean pop), and controlled most of their artistic material. |

I wouldn't call him "leftist", but "liberal" is more fitting. "Leftist" carries connotations of socialistic/communistic tendencies, but as far as I know, Seo Taiji didn't lean that far. He just didn't like the oppressive hold the government (and therefore older generation) had on the younger folk. |

I saw those posters in Seoul today.
Who is that guy anyway (i.e. how did he impact Korean culture and music?) |

I love Seotaiji! The tix for ETP fest were $134 though. Ouch. |

If I'm not mistaken, this is his second 'come back'. He makes a splash, then disappears for a few years. This is his 3rd time around, as far as I know. A seminal figure in Korean pop culture. |

I had a student do a one hour presentation on Seotaiji, and he played several music samples. Seotaiji did a pretty good job of covering diverse Western music styles in Korean. While some may say "So what, he didn't do anything new," he was the first pop star to bring Western music in Korean to the youth of Korea.
He was part of a group in the 80's until he went solo and that's when he really blew up. In one album he has a hip-hop sound...two tracks in particular sound like Cypress Hill. Another album is Metallica style metal. He does other styles too. Very talented, I think. |
