The only real cool place, if you like dance clubs, is "Hongdae," which is near a major university in Seoul. If you just want to go there with some friends and dance and drink, it is adequate. If you are going there to meet up with girls (or guys?), it's still much more difficult to do that there than anywhere else in Asia.
Besides Hongdae, there's Itaewon. It's the "foreigner zone" of Seoul. There are some decent bars, one or two dance places, a jazz place, and lots of foreigners and skanky women. There's a US army base nearby, so you see alot of army guys.
Generally, if you are moving to Asia only to teach and have awesome nightlife, Korea and Seoul are not the places to be; for rating cities' nightlife prospects, Seoul is at the bottom of the list of major Asian cities. |

If that's true, I think you made a poor choice for a username. |

Itaewon
HongDae
KangNam St.
KonKuk St.
YonShinNae St.
ApGuJong St.
Itaewon has international food and some decent Euro-style pubs. You can shoot pool and darts, and get some decent pints.
HongDae has some good Korean, Italian, and Japanese eats, a ton of clubs (most of which are underground bars with loud music and expensive beers), and some decent things to see (concerts and crafts in the park, etc...)
KangNam Station (the alley behind) is a full string of Korean bars. A lot of posers, but not bad if you go with a group.
KongKuk University Station area has Korean style bars and eats. Go with a group.
YonShinNae Station. More of the same, but an interesting switch for some new places. Not many foreigners know about the area.
ApKuJong Station area is renowned for its expensive eats and drinks. A serious number of serious posers, but, again, not bad for something different if you're in a group. There are a ton of overpriced wine bars and cocktail places and, accordingly, a lot of eye candy.
All over, every neighborhood in Seoul:
THE CHICKEN HOF. By far the best place to get some grub and a pint with a few friends.
THE SOJU BANG. Down and dirty. Cheap, low quality food and soju. Hey, if they can sell it for that price and still make a profit, there's no way it can be good for you!
THE CORNER STORE. Often frequented during the warmer months, most of Seoul's corner stores and mom-n-pop opperations put a few table and chair sets out front. Some have TVs in the window or pipe music out, too. A nice change up, although you might have to beat out the locals in the upper age set for a seat. |

Yeonsinnae is a good time and off the beaten path, as noted. Also, the area near Bupyeong station, near Incheon, is pretty cool. I went to a booking club there, and the (male) DJ took his clothes off and danced around in a Marquis de Sade masque. It was hella funny.
I find if you and one or two whitey friends get together and hit up a Korean heavy nightlife area, it can be a pretty good time, if you're sick of the Hongdae/Itaewon/Gangnam circuit. |

His descriptions of Hongdae and Itaewon were accurate enough, if somewhat differently worded than how I would describe them. As far as rated against other Asian cities, it's not that bad depending on what you're into. Seoul never sleeps, partly because public transportation ends early and we all have to stay up until 5:30am. |

I'd like to add to these drinking places
THE GARBAGE BIN STYLE RESTAURANTS- These are the best places to eat meat and get drunk. You sit around a makeshift garbage bin that has been converted into a table. These are by far the best places to have Samgyupsal
SOJU TENTS-Outdoor tents found in the outskirts of Seoul. Serve unusual things like living octopus and chickens feet. These tend to be pricey and the food is hit or miss. Despite that it's a must do experience.
HOE RESTAURANTS- Not to be confused with Japanese restaurants. Usually has a fish tank outside. Serves fresh raw fish on a bed of sliced raddish with a multitude of side dishes. It's considered a splurge by Korean standards.
MEAT BUFFET- Serves lots of low quality frozen beef and pork. A splurge for DDD workers.
JUICY BARS- Usually in Iteawon. Rip off bars for GI's and English teacher.
Ladies are skilled at removing your cash while avoiding having to sleep with you.
KOREAN NIGHT CLUBS- Have stupid names like Arabian Knights. A complete waste of money. Music is bad, food is way over priced.Boring annoying
TALONJUNE MYEONGS- Singing rooms with female company. These places are hit or miss, with the emphasis on miss. Only go with a Korean speaker.
TUNA BUFFETS- Open concept Japanese style restaurants that serve raw tuna. You can get lots of free drinks including the eyeball wine served in a tea kettle. |

Sorry Ukon, this was the Korea forum. Were you confused thinking you were someplace else?
Korea either never sleeps, or most of it goes to bed very early because of those early-ending subways, that is correct. To put Seoul into perpective, go live in Shanghai, Taipei, Hongkong, Osaka, Tokyo, or Bangkok. Then you will see what I mean. |

You missed a ton of great neighborhoods and claim the city sucks? lemme guess, your one of those types who only hangs out in Hongdae and Itaewon....they're decent, but other places exist. There are also plenty of hidden places you have to search out. |

That back alley in Insadong with all those cheap Makoli Bossam places.
Really rustic and laid back. Not a good place to score but a great place to take a date or just hang out with the boys. |
