My supervisor is INSANE.
So, my school just moved me to a house that is 20 minutes drive from anywhere, including the bus terminal that I have to get to to go to several of my schools. One of the conditions of me letting them move me so far away was that they help me get a scooter, as without one, I am SOL and unable to teach. Naturally, I have to get a license for my scooter/motorcycle. The driving school is at 1pm on Tuesday, and is 3 hours. Unfortunately, on Tuesday afternoons I have a 1 hour teacher�s workshop that I teach, though it�s quite informal and borderline optional. The teachers said they would be okay with moving it, but the supervisor refused to let me move it. Instead, she wants me to take the driving class that is on Wednesday at 1pm, and since the driving hagwon is an hour away, and I would get back from the classes at 5pm, approximately the time that the paperwork is due at the police station, SHE HAS CALLED THE POLICE STATION AND ASKED THEM TO STAY OPEN LATER. This woman is insane. My co-teacher kept telling her on the phone �no, she cannot take the class that day - the paperwork is due that day� but she kept saying that she�d call and get the police station to stay open an extra hour. Yeah, enjoy that pipe dream while it lasts, lady.
The story gets even better! They�re letting me take that day as a �sick day�, to go take the classes. They won�t move a 1 hour teacher�s workshop, but they�ll let me use a sick day to get out of a full day�s work. What the hell?
Anyway, just thought you�d enjoy an example of Korean insanity.

| So your co-worker is going to report you for breaking the law and putting other people's lives at risk? God she is insane. Get it through your head. You need to follow the laws if you choose to operate a motor vehicle in Korea. You also MUST get insurance. The fact of the matter is that you DO NOT have the funds to self insure yourself and pay for the injuries you would cause another person if you hit them. Grow up and act like an adult...you are the insane one. |

Uh, I do have insurance for it. And I do have insurance for myself, as well. I do not mind getting a license. My co-teacher's behavior is not what the post is about. It's about how my supervisor thinks she can convince the police station to stay open late just because she doesn't want to move an optional workshop.
I should add that actually, it's my co-teacher who went with me to get said scooter. When I bought it, I asked her to ask the man if I needed a license. She said he said I did not. I asked her if that seemed correct, and she said yes. However, now she is acting as if that conversation never occurred and as if I'm some sort of criminal. |

| Trust me she's doing you a favor. What sort motor vehicle insurance did you buy without a proper license? Police stations close? Very convenient for criminals. |

Hey you got the day off. (sick day/personal day) I do understand your point but maybe there is some schedual conflict they are not telling you about.
Sometimes students say they don't have a problem with something but then complain behind your back.

Last time I checked, you don't need a license for anything under 125cc. Anything over, you just need a regular drivers licence (I think over 250 you need a motorcycle license, but I'm not sure). As for insurance on a scooter, I was told that you can only get liability insurance...
I have been riding a motorcycle (125cc) for over a year now without any problems. I have no insurance. In fact, I had a little run in with a truck the other day, and the dudes insurance paid my hospital bills, to fix my bike and is giving my some money for compensation. Like the one dude said, be careful...once you get to places with good transportation, use the bus system, etc, is my advice.
On another note - yes...your supervisor is insane. I have been inundated with Korean Stupidities these days. The motorcycle accident has been the highlight of my dealings with Koreans (well, not the motorcycle accident itself, but the aftermath...I was waiting to get yelled at and instead, I am getting paid).

Apparently they are now required. I live in a small town where every shopkeeper and their mother knows me, and it would take about .08sec to get reported. |

You are irresponsible and a fool and I hope no Korean has to suffer from your stupidity while you are in their country. |
