According to my own made up system (and one I'm sure many others have thought of) to bridge the gap between US "medal count" and international "gold count", I give 3 points for gold, 2 for silver one for bronze. and, as of right now, the U.S. and China are tied, at exactly 200 points each.

I believe that's how it works. Or how it used to work. Or it could've just been something I saw on TV a long time ago, but nothing that was official.

Anyway, there's no "Olympic Champion" award for nations.

It should be 4, 2, 1. I'm sorry, but a silver is not worth 2/3rds of a gold, and a silver plus a bronze is still not as glorious as a single gold.

Just accept it. China wins on golds, by a very large margin. Silvers and bronzes don't cut it.

Lets not stop there. Lets rank each event and give more weight to important athletic medals such as track, swimming, marathon, baketball, decathalon. Certainly the marathon gold medal is betther than womans 50 meter air rifle. No one would suggest that team handball is the same as basketball.

Also why not factor in total physical medal haul, by weight. When a soccer team wins the gold medal each team member gets a medal. Thats 22 actual gold medals, in basketball thats 12 medals. Yet it only shows up as one in the medal table. Must be a Chinese conspiracy to keep the US team down since the US does much better in team sports than China.

Just count up the discs and see who has the most. This isn't poker.

Bite me.

If we're going to count medals, both the Chinese way and the American way are unsatisfactory.

The Chinese say its gold or nothing. Why bother with the other medals at all then?

The Americans want to make all medals equivalent, even though only one anthem is sung when the medal ceremony takes place, and the gold medalist takes the highest position center stage. I'm with the OP, counting medals on a point system is not an irrational position.

A numbers of complaints from Chinese users who claim they cannot download songs from iTunes for their iPods has prompted a rumor that China may have blocked iTunes or certain iTunes content due to pro-Tibet tracks being available for download. The Art of Peace Foundation's new album "Songs for Tibet," was recently released on the service, and many feel that when it comes to the Chinese government, this is likely not a coincidence.

"The possibility of a block is high, and I'd say it should be due to a content issue," said Liu Bin, associate director of the Beijing consulting firm BDA. Danny Levinson, CEO of a digital direct marketing company in Shanghai, said that the core URL seems to be stopped on the China side, but worked when accessed from abroad.

"We've seen the situation but can't offer any more information," Apple's Beijing publicist Yuna Huang said. The Dalai Lama was interviewed for the Thursday edition of French newspaper Le Monde, in which he accused Chinese forces of firing at protesters in Eastern Tibet, claiming he has unconfirmed reports that 180 people were killed.
