All the korean newspapers are touting korea as being 7th in the TOTAL Medal standings, not the gold...but the total overall......yet.....if you look at the actual olympic medal tracker...korea is 8th.
This is not a flame....just curious.
NATION TOTAL MEDALS GOLD SILVER BRONZE
United States 110 36 38 36
China 100 51 21 28
Russia 72 23 21 28
Great Britain 47 19 13 15
Australia 46 14 15 17
Germany 41 16 10 15
France 40 7 16 17
South Korea 31 13 10 8
Italy 28 8 10 10
Am I missing something? Was my math teacher wrong when they were teaching me how to count? |

I looked up North Korea's count to see if maybe SK was adding those in, but that doesn't do it. (NK 2 + 1 + 3 = 6) Six more would not put Korea past France (40).
Maybe they are giving themselves a bonus point in the standings for being in the top 10? |

Or maybe, it has something to do with the logic of Koreans being born 1 year old. Actually, I don't have a problem with that.
But yes, it is strange that the Korean media is reporting Korea as 7th place. |

They came 7th if you use the IOC medal ranking (based on gold medals) rather than the system used in the states (based on total medals). To me it seems a little strange to use total medals as it places an equal value on gold and bronze medals.
As I understand it most of the world uses the IOC system
Rank Nation Gold Silver Bronze Total
1 China (CHN) 51 21 28 100
2 United States 36 38 36 110
3 Russia (RUS) 23 21 28 72
4 Great Britain 19 13 15 47
5 Germany (GER) 16 10 15 41
6 Australia (AUS) 14 15 17 46
7 South Korea 13 10 8 31
8 Japan (JPN) 9 6 10 25
9 Italy (ITA) 8 10 10 28
10 France (FRA) 7 16 17 40 |

As has been said in other threads, the TOTAL medal count means nothing. The official table goes by Golds, then Silvers, then Bronzes. Korea is 7th in Golds by having 13 compared to France's several less. |

USA is the only country using the total medal count table. Wonder why? |

The UK is number 4 either way you count it, but definitely going by gold is the proper way.
Korea is number 7 with 13 golds, their best ever. |
