oh yeah, he did say that, and before he could finish the - "you're a foreigner" I turned and walked away and didn't look back.

this was in the IPark Mall where I was pricing those very small nb computers - there are some from Taiwan that are pretty cute but don't really have decent HDs (4-8 gig??!!) and some a little better - sometimes the signs are there with prices and in this case it was - I don't recall how much - but when I asked about it - and we had been discussing the various nbs he had on display - he starts trying to explain how that price on the sign was only for Koreans and since I wasn't Korean ....as I said before...

from now on everytime I hear this I'm going to post it - let's see just how prevalent it is - maybe everyone should do the same !!

Was he maybe trying to tell you it would be more expensive if you wanted the English version of the operating system installed on it? Maybe that is what he meant by Korean price...foreigner price.

The prices listed at these places are often not the actual price, but actually the price if you have a certain card, that yes, only Koreans (in almost all circumstances) can get. Maybe you should have asked him to explain instead of walking out and rushing home to write about it on here.

no rush dear - I actually forgot about it until something else reminded me -

certainly you two didn't waste any time dismissing his remarks however - what's up with that?

as in - it certainly didn't have anything to do with the OS - but is interesting you brought it up - how many of the salejerks ---oops I mean salesclerks - felt it necessary to point out to me the OS was in K - Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

kinda like the "you use chopsticks??" attitude -

I think I found your problem. You want to get away from the Ipark mall to get a good deal in Yongsan.

I say what I said because it happened to me, and while not wording it the exact some way, he essentially said that I couldn't have it at that price. When I asked him why, he told me about the card, which was a special Korean credit card.

I for one have let my emotions get the best of me several times in Korea only to later find out that ...believe it or not...my interpretation of the situation was all wrong. Now, I give people the benefit of the doubt if for no other reason than it is not healthy for me to go around thinking every counter person is a crook. It makes me sick enough to see how Korean CEOs get to steal and get out of jail free. Unless you speak Korean fluently, anything is possible.

I'm willing to bet that's exactly what it was. It's happened to me a number of times when looking at electrical goods. Why would a big company like that have different prices for Koreans and foreigners? A mom and pop store, maybe, but still doubtful. One of the biggest electrical outlets in the country, I highly doubt it.

The fact that it's because you need a certain card that as a foreigner you can't even get doesn't make it any less insulting to me.

You come across as quite rude on these forums, maybe the guy felt the same way and decided he didn't want to sell to you. Either way, no sympathy from me.

am not sure why you are acting like such an arse to judge me the way you do unless - gasp!! - you ARE an arse - !!

funny how many excuses I'm hearing here -

I didn't understand him correctly -
it was about a certain kind of card
he didn't want to sell something to me

any more excuses??

and yes, I agree about going to the wrong place but Yongsan markets are too hot - anyway, it's almost always difficult for women to shop for electronics, has always been that way and probably always will be - K or anywhere else - many (most?) men see electronics as a male-dominated concept - but that's a whole other thread -

I've been told that there was a "foreigner surcharge" for cell phones. Definately did not make the purchase.

I've always had to purchase cell phones through my wife even though I have an F-5 visa.

Did you ask the sales person to explain? You are the one that makes it sound like you didn't ask for a further explanation. And, several of us here are telling you based on our own experiences in Korea that usually the first words to come out of a Koreans mouth aren't generally the bottom line. Sure, I have seen blatant racism here...but 90% of the time it comes down to miscommunication due to the language barrier and foreigners having no patience for dealing with Koreans.
