I am talking the more recent releases, I have seen all the classics (Exorcist, Shining, etc).

anyone have any good recommendations?

I have seen a string of average / terrible movies lately:

The Happening (terrible)
The Messengers (terrible)
The Mist (average)
Halloween 2007 (terrible...didn't bother getting all the way through that one)

what is out there?

You've probably seen it, but I really liked The Descent.

1408 was a pleasant surprise. I knew little about it, had low expectations, and found it refreshing.

The Orphanage has a few spooky moments, it wasn't to my taste, but it's well made and worth a look.

I have never seen a horror flick I was impressed with.

Maybe silence of the lambs, if that counts.

I've seen both 1408 and The Descent and found both to be good.

I love these two. The final scene in dog soldiers is an absolute classic.

The Mist wasn't bad. Disagree with that one.

Scariest movies I've ever seen would have to be The Exorcist, The Grudge, Audition and Fire in the Sky.

They didn't make me jump at the time but they all gave me the creeps afterwards.

Suicide Club is another one but not sure that's a horror movie.

Rec.

Awesome movie, filmed in blair witch/cloverfield style.
The original just came out, its online. Spanish with English subs.
Or you can wait for the US knock off which will be out in December called Quarantine. I personally loved the Spanish one, and think now that ive watched it the US will have to be really good. Best horror ive seen in a loong time. Most these days are predictable, not really scary or japanese remakes.

other movies of interest.....

The Cottage
The After Dark Horrorfest movies, though this year theyre a bit piss poor.
The Ruins
Shrooms
and ill 2nd the Dog Soldiers recommendation, that movie is fukn awesome.

Agreed, both of those are as about as good as the horror genre gets in my opinion.

Also check out the Korean Vengeance Trilogy including Oldboy, Mr. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance.

One I don't see mentioned is

The Strangers (2007)

Spooky, at least on the big screen. Some of this 70's sequels I found suspenseful like The Hills Have Eyes, The Toolbox Murders, and Last House On The Left.

Bit gory though.

My favorite horror film in recent memory would have to be the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. It's fast, funny, full of gore, and has some of the coolest brain-splattering moments in cinematic history.

Purists hate the fact that the zombies are much faster and more aggressive, but I think that adds a much needed level of intensity to the film.

The first 10 minutes are incredible...give it a shot.

That's actually a 2008 movie. Not to split hairs or anything.

So I watched Dog Soldiers after reading this thread and... it was stupid.

What a crappy movie. Didn't finish it. The OP is looking for good horror movies, I believe.
