Am I the only one waiting with bated breath for the announcement of where 2MB's 30 billion fortune is to be spent? This announcement is a little overdue if we are to believe this article: http://media.daum.net/foreign/all/view.html?cateid=1007&newsid=20080806091521147&cp=koreaherald.

Or have I missed the announcement? Someone tell me if I have, as I think it should set a precedent for some others in the world, leading to headlines like:

King of Swaziland Donates 13 Wives to Public Service

Dear Leader's Vast Film Collection Distributed to Masses in Open Show of Love to Loyal Subjects

Gaddafi Presents Original Manuscript of Green Book to British Museum

Putin Awards Chechnya to the Ossetians

Thaksin Vows to Place Manchester City in the First Division (hang on that's old news)

Any more ideas?

The former Hyundai CEO is expected to donate up to 30 billion won of his fortune, excluding only his Nonhyun-dong residence in southern Seoul.

Some officials, however, are seeking to capitalize on the president`s donation plans by postponing an official announcement until around November or December.

They said that this may help stoke positive public sentiment to pull the administration through its latest challenges on the security and diplomatic front.

I would doubt that last sentence very much. These plans have been known about for a long time, and yet when I ask Koreans their opinions on LMB, they never say "oh yes, he's the nice man who wants to donate all his money to charity".

I think it's generally understood that a guy like LMB is always going to have some way of falling back into a cushy lifestyle, and that giving away all this money will not likely entail much personal sacrifice, and can thus be easily written off as a publicity stunt.

Hey if President Lee goes through with it I have nothing but respect for the man. Personally, I think he is a smart man and something that is long overdue for Korea...unfortunately Koreans don't view him the same way.

On the day that he took control of the "Blue House" in Korea they sent a limo to pick him up. He showed up on his own in his mini van.

Let's put it this way, the chances of him actually doing this are so slim, if he does give away 30 billion won, I will streak (yes, totally naked) around Seoul City Hall.

W30 Billion Give Away Cancelled!

Seoul, South Korea (UPI)
President Lee Myung Bak, in an emergency press conference called especially to deal with an internet threat:
Quote:
if he does give away 30 billion won, I will streak (yes, totally naked) around Seoul City Hall
from a poster known as Milwaukiedave, real name unknown. President Lee said, "I would not put the good citizens of Seoul through something like this. In the interests of public safety and decorum, I have cancelled my plans to give W30 billion to the poor. Instead I will build golf courses for the rich." Upon hearing the announcement, there was an audible sigh of relief from the gathered members of the media.
