This is my second time around and I'm working for a new school in Guri-city.
the first time I was in Seoul.

At my first school, income tax taken out of my paycheck was never more that 9-10,000 won. At this new school it's nearly 100,000 won.
Also, my Residents tac (Inhabitants' Tax?) changes from less than 1,000won to 12,000won

How much should be taken out for taxes?
Is my new hagwon doing something wrong? Should I be paying that much in taxes?

Thanks

Your new boss is a thief.

http://www.nts.go.kr/eng/

and withholding taxes (including resident tax) is about 1.7% on a salary of 2.2 million. (40k won per month)

this is the link to the tax calculator. Input your salary in man-won (2.2 mil = 2200, 2.3 mil = 2300, etc).

You can plug your info into the NTS calculator on their website: http://www.nts.go.kr/eng/help/help_52.asp?top_code=H001&sub_code=HS05&ssub_code=HSE2

Just a few notes on your taxes:
  • 소득세 is income tax, which is deducted on a sliding scale based on your income. This is what is calculated by the service linked above.
  • 주민세, or resident/inhabitant tax, is 10% of 소득세. 12,000 won sounds way too high, by the way.
  • Your employer should also be deducting 연금 (pension) and 건강보험료 (national health insurance) from your check.
It sounds like you were paying too little at your previous workplace, but too much at your current one. But do the math and figure out exactly what you should be paying, then ask why what you are paying differs from that.
