Just wonder what percentage of this board has been paid late this winter.
Korean economy is in a downturn. Maybe it's just my school.
I'll be paid 3-weeks past pay day. My school's M.O. is to pay a few days late each month but this is ridiculous.

In the two years I have been here I've always been paid on time(there are a couple other controversies however such as pension that are problems). |

Are you guys working in mom and pop shops or franchises?
My hagwon is a franchise and will sometimes pay a week late which I tolerate.

I agree with matthews world. Franchises don't pay late, independent mom 'n pop shops are far more likely to...
I'm fine now, but I had to beat my boss around the head to get paid at my former place. Even had to quit one time. |

Old hagwon was a major chain. Usually paid on time, but a few times was paid late and I was not happy about it, especially when the excuse given was that parents paid with a credit card and it takes over a week for the money to get to them. I thought this was reasonable but then why are so many parents paying in cash? Why when a holiday is coming up we can't get the pay a day early instead of 3 days after what is stated in the contract?
I had a few choice words over these matters. Korean business practice seems to be to pay for the past based on your future...so if the future is turning to crap then you are likely not to be paid on time, if at all...even at the franchise hagwons.
New hagwon is a "mom and pop" and I've been paid on time so far. |

I'd say a high percentage of parents pay with credit cards. In my view, many families use their credit cards and max them out.
I see a few kids at my hagwon not returning for a month or two because of this.

Really? At my last school, almost all the kids had 'pay envelopes' which would be taken home once a month to be stuffed full of cash. |

Both my first and second paycheck have been paid late so far. On the 25th of the month instead of the 17th. Administration problems apparently |

I was paid late once, confronted my boss and got paid the next day.
However.... the Korean teacher has been paid late every month since then, and that was 4 months ago. This month, when my boss finally paid the Korean teacher a week late, it was 200,000 won short. Her explanation for it being short? "Consider it a loan, because we're such good friends."
My paycheck this month was paid for with her credit card, and the Korean teacher has overheard my boss asking friends for loans to keep the school afloat.
Apparently my school isn't even pulling in enough tuition to cover salaries and rent, let alone other little extras like light, heat, and photocopy paper.
I only have 40 days left in my contract, I'm going to have to try to find someplace that's a bit more stable. I've heard too many horrorstories about the things that can happen when your hogwon goes out of business or gets sold, and I really don't trust my boss to make sure I get paid if I go down with the ship. |

I consistently got paid late at my crappy hagwon (avoid Kids Herald School in Cheonan!!!). I would go to the bank on the night of the 10th, which was supposed to be payday, not find my money there and then go into school the next day and ask, "Where is my money?" They would say, "We're paying you tommorrow." I would say, "Payday was yesterday." They would say, "I know, what's your point." Repeat every monthx 9 months.
I began to dread payday....the money was always there but I think they just paid the foreign teachers late for a little power trip....to prove that they were really in control and there was nothing we could do about it. |
