(CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama's choice for running mate will be announced to supporters in a text message Saturday morning, senior Obama campaign officials told CNN on Friday night, and a senior party official said it won't be Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Sen. Barack Obama says he has decided on his running mate but is not yet ready to reveal the name.

Obama called some people on his short list for the vice presidential slot Thursday night to tell them he had not selected them as a running mate, a highly placed Democratic Party source said.

A senior Democratic official who had spoken with Clinton told CNN late Friday that the Obama campaign has communicated to her through private channels that she will not be Obama's vice presidential pick.

Also, sources close to Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine said he has been informed he was not selected. One source told CNN that Obama personally made the call to Kaine. Another source said Kaine has flown to Denver, Colorado, for the Democratic National Convention. See who's in the running

It is not known who else may have gotten calls.

However, late Friday two Democratic sources confirmed that Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh is also out of the running.

Pros and cons of VP contenders
Most of this week's buzz had been around Bayh of Indiana, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware and Kaine. The contenders kept a low profile and Biden has avoided any lengthy interviews.

Rep. Chet Edwards said Friday that the campaign had vetted him but that he hasn't talked to Obama. Watch panelists weigh in on top VP contenders

Edwards, 56, is a nine-term congressman representing the Central Texas district that includes President Bush's ranch near Crawford.

This month, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi touted Edwards as a dark horse contender for the No. 2 spot on the ticket.

The presumptive Democratic nominee was working Friday in Chicago, Illinois, on his address for the convention. He will launch a string of rallies with his running mate on Saturday in Springfield, Illinois.

Obama said Thursday that he had made his decision but declined to give further details.

"I won't comment on anything else until I introduce our running mate to the world," Obama said in Emporia, Virginia. "That's all you're going to get out of me." Watch Obama say he's made his choice

Clinton re-entered the running mate conversation this week after a poll indicating that nearly half of her supporters have yet to embrace Obama.

The Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll out Wednesday night said 52 percent of Clinton supporters said they will vote for Obama. Twenty-one percent favor Republican Sen. John McCain, while 27 percent are undecided or say they will vote for "someone else.''

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

The former first lady was considered one of the top VP contenders shortly after she ended her White House run in June, but rumors of lingering tension between the former rivals and word that her name would be placed in nomination at the convention are partially to blame for political observers kicking her out of the top tier.

Other big names thought to be in the running included retired Gen. Wesley Clark, Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, former Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia, Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

I'm just wondering why he didn't pick Edwards. That is John Edwards. Yeah I know he did the nasty with that chick and all but I look at it this way every time a woman came forward and accused Bill Clinton of groping them or dropping his pants in front of them his popularity among women increased. Yes, tis true.
I wonder if the chicks are going to be steamed he didn't pick "Hillbilly" (aka Hillary...Billy included of course).

Joe was being coy last week. He said it wasn't going to be him. Confused

Biden is a strong choice. True he's from a small state, but that shouldn't hurt. He's sharp as a tack and witty to boot. That's a plus. We might get some humor in the campaign now. He's as experienced as a senator can get. He's something of a 'safe' choice, but that is probably good. He dropped out too early to know if he's a good campaigner, so we'll have to wait to learn that. At 65 he's probably only good for one term if it comes to that.

All in all, not a bad first decision by Obama.

Oh NO.

He's too aggressive. However, Biden will stop Obama from saying stupid things about foreign policy because Biden has a lot of foreign policy experience and he knows what he's talking about in that regard.

There is the attack dog theory of VeeP selection, most famously in recent times, Spiro Agnew. In this theory, the VeeP's job is to do the attacking while letting the presidential candidate stand above the fray. That would fit the dynamics of Obama's campaign just fine.

I'd say Dick Cheney is a much more recent and well-known example than Agnew. Smile

I do sometimes forget that most posters here think of 1968 as ancient history. Confused

Even so, I don't think of Cheney as an attack dog. He's more the eminence grise sort, and not just in my mind.

Lloyd Bentsen might be a better recent example, though perhaps I'm extrapolating too much from his most famous moment.

I would also imagine that, while not an attack dog per se, LBJ was able to make the sort of speeches and pander to the sort of people that Kennedy couldn't have without tarnishing his image of a youthful idealist.

Obama insures he gets Delaware. Woo woo!

Biden is the king of bloviation.

This is the same guy who said that Obama wasn't ready for the president's job during the primaries. And who plagiarised parts of one of Neil Kinnock's speeches. And parts of a spech by RFK. And an article from the law review when he was in law school.

At least he thinks Obama is " ... the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," who has run for president.

Obama could have done better.

Ha ha! Team Obama sent their text messages to supporters at 3am!

This early text is apparently a little late, as Ambinder reported the pick at 1am on Saturday.

Bold pick by Obama, and I think a good one. McCain has already fallen into the trap of running ads like this one showing Biden saying good things about McCain and bad things about Obama. But this is why Biden was chosen: Obama wanted to demonstrate that he wanted a non-partisan candidate, and he also must have wanted to demonstrate that he is not overly sensitive about racial gaffes. This pick has the potential to be talked about and talked about for weeks. Isn't that the smart pick?

I don't like McCain, but the ad is great. It'll make Biden look like a douche once his fiddle starts playing the 'Obama is ready tune.'

Now all Obama needs is someone whose last name is "Laden" to add to the team and you could have:

Obama-Biden-Laden.

Does anyone see a pattern here?

Obama may just get the last laugh depending on whom McCain picks as VeeP.

I rather liked that statement. It's a fair way to distinguish between Obama on the one hand and Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson on the other, and that is exactly what he was doing.

I still say Spiro is the best example of an attack dog nominee. He was otherwise unqualified for the position and Nixon knew it. Johnson could deliver Texas and much of the South in addition to having been Senate Majority Leader for years and an acknowledged master of Congressional wheeling and dealing. Bentsen, well other than being a respected Senator, I never knew why he was chosen. He never came across to me as an attack dog although he did score big against Quayle.

Biden will have no trouble dealing with the 'not ready' comment. All he has to say is that he believes Obama has shown over the last 6 months that he is ready. It won't take the speech writers more than an hour or two to come up with a script for that speech.
