Ok, so probably not, but strap yourselves in, this baby's supposed to be fully operational in September.

This is really cool. I'm wondering what's going to happen when this goes full blast.

Physics rules! Anyone remember (or know about) this?

No worry about death, there was a in depth interview on the BBC web site with one of the lead scientists......very interesting.

Anyway if they do some how manage to create a black hole it would only exist for less than a second.. Cool

Personally, I think it would be most interesting if no Higgs Boson is ever discovered. The Higgs Boson is a sort of weird add on addition to the Standard Model in order for mass to exist. There are certainly a number of other variations on the Higgs Boson idea that would also give rise to mass. So, I would not be surprised if it is never found.

The Higgs Boson is an explanation for dark matter.......isn't it? Confused

It would certainly be interesting if Higgs Bosons were numerous enough to be a candidate for dark matter, but I have never heard of anyone ever suggesting that before.

A more usual candidate for dark matter is the postulated zoo of supersymmetric particles. Supersymmetry has some nice theoretical aspects about it, but I am also not a fan of it so to speak since it would double the number of particles and we have yet to detect one of them. This means that there must be a huge mass asymmetry between regular particles and their supersymmetric partners, assuming the idea is correct. However, the masses cannot be too big or this could cause potential problems with General Relativity.

So, most particle theorists think that if we do not detect any supersymmetric particles at the LHC, then the idea of supersymmetry will have to be discarded.

I guess there's no remaining reason to hold back on the beer and the donuts.
