Does anyone know some Jiu Jitsu or MMA classes near Sanbon?
Just to keep the thread alive, I got my hapkido black belt in under a year and my friend back home kicked my ass more soundly than he used to before I moved here. Clearly there is something wrong with my belt. How do you access the secret powers of the black belt?
If that doesn't keep it alive- see the movie Red Belt. See it now. Do not wait. |

Hi,
If it is still open, there is a Muay Thai place near Geumjong station, not sure if that will do it for you. Other than that, I really don't know. I think it is near the Dunkin Donuts, go near that area on the corner and look around, the sign is on the top of the building. |

Yeah, right by the station? I've seen it, but I really want to do some ground work. Thanks though. |

Lol. Black belt in a year. When I first got here, there were two Canadian girls a month or two away from leaving. They were excited because they were going to get their black belts in hapkido before they left. I think they studied for about 8 months. I took tae kwon do for seven years when I was a kid and got up to blue belt. Even then, Seng Seet, our instructor, always said he was being generous. There's a five year old at my sons' Wu Shu dojan who has a blue belt. I'd put my blue belt against her blue belt any day....especially cause she's five and I have about 180 pounds on her. |

Hapkido is a effin joke.. "The world is not made of Handgrabers"
I just did my black belt in KyukTooKi. 2 Years to do it. I trained everyday, plus I also had 6 Amatuer fights. Went home for a month and sparred with some Kickboxers there that studied for 5 years and I easily kicked their asses. |

I looked up some videos, but I didn't see any groundwork. Is it kickboxing with a few takedowns? |

Hapkido is mostly throws and joint-locks. Kicking, falls and groundwork are there as well. Different schools may teach vary varied curriculum though. With proper study and full speed practice hapkido has the potential to be one of the scarier martial arts. I would not want to fight someone who had been training a long time at a quality school. |

I was actually wondering what was in Kyuk too ki. Is it just striking and kicking with some takedowns (like what I know of Mui Thai) or is there a grappling element?
I agree with Hapkido's potential, but I think that is true of pretty much all well rounded martial arts. How good you are depends on the quality of your instruction, your dedication to training, and your personal athletic ability.
I've taken Jiu Jitsu, Karate, Judo, and Hapkido and I am mostly struck by how many similar aspects they all have (especially in the upper levels). I think what changes is what each art seems to focus on.
Jiu Jitsu is a lot of bigger joint locks (some small) and ground work, Judo is throws and ground work (with a lot more pins and gi techniques) Karate is kicks and strikes and Hapkido is small joint locks (some big) and kicks. But I have learned variations of the same techniques at all levels (I haven't studied a lot of advanced stuff in hapkido yet) in all of these arts (with the exception my school of Karate doesn't do groundwork).
Oh, and I am not some kick a$$ take names chick because I did all these arts (usually at the same time). I just ask my teachers a lot of questions. Unfortunately my hapkido teachers seem less inclined to show me anything except what we are learning that day. |
