so? where are you from? 80s, 90s or the millennium rock&roll scene?
i really need to know because it may mean nothing to you, but to me, to me, it means everything...
as for my handsome ass, i'm so tomorrow and 80s rock&roll that i'm still crushing on Pamela Anderson! God help my old sexual loins but it's where i'm from, baby!
and, my 80s soul belong to The Pixies.

The 90s saw a revival of the 60s and 70s - which were surely the best Rock & Roll decades - so 90s it is. |

1955-1985. Even then it was going downhill after '70; nothing after '85 even qualifies as music. Impossible to have only one, but as a representative, CCR. |

What?
The 50's ...ok, yes. The 60's was message music.
The 70's had some ok stuff but was far too self indulgent, the punk thing must be taken on its own merit however.
But Jesus, the 80's? Some ground breaking synth work all due to tech getting cheaper, surrounded by a bunch of crap. The 80's was image music, sort of like this millennium.
The 90's....bands like Soundgarden were groundbreaking in terms of rhythm and texture.
Id say the 90's |

I voted disco because I'm split. The best ten years of the last 28 were from '86-'95 I'd say. Most of the bands and artists that define the nineties for me were making great music in the eighties too. |

In terms of rock, I might go early to mid 90's, but in terms of any other music, the 80's was way better. I even dig some of the 80's pop (ie. MJ in his prime), but have no time for Britney spears or the backstreet boys...
On second thought though, I might have to go 80's... there were a lot of truly great rock bands that I still listen to often like the Smiths and the Police. Lots of 70's bands/artists made great albums in the 80s like Queen, Van Halen and David Bowie. Most of the new wave bands were good too. Even the kitschier one hit wonder kind of stuff like Billy Idol and Duran Duran was pretty cool in retrospect...
The 80's was just a messed up, but fun and exuberant decade. I think the 90's was actually a pretty big bummer in comparison. |

yeah, many of the bands that hit it big in the 90s formed in the 80s. smashing pumpkins, my bloody valentine and nirvana just to name a few...
i miss the 80s' chick bands the most... |

I agree.
Bands/Artists that became big during this time:
Guns 'N Roses - arguably the biggest band during the late 80's/early 90's. Too bad Axl is batsh1t crazy.
Metallica - in their hey-day during this period, altho I've never been a fan personally.
Soundgarden
Nirvana - altho I think they're overrated by present day critics, you can't deny their infulence on youth of the early 90's.
Foo Fighters (Dave Grohl) - One of the best musicians around, very successful after Nirvana finished... must be one of the greatest success stories of a musician leaving a immensly popular band and continuing to stay in the spotlight.
Pearl Jam - My personal favourite and the only major band that has managed to stay together since the "grunge" (I kcufin hate that word) era. Their latest album (self titled) is, IMO, their best to date. |

The best music came out between 1976-1979. Early punk and two tone ska. The Original Ska under the Trojan label was way better than all that hippie music in the sixties. New wave was a farce and just a way to re-cycle disco. |

Depends on the situation...
Cruising down the highway with the windows down, gotta go with 80's rock. Some good AC/DC, GNR, etc.
Feeling like you're a no good loser whose daddy didn't love him and now you want to kill yourself cuz no one "gets" you: go with 90's rock.
Millenium rock: Couldn't tell you who's "rocking" these days. |

rock and roll died an untidy and embarrassing death in the early 70s.
the only bands that survived the 70s as far as rock and roll goes are the ramones and black flag. you can't argue with that.
2 bands playing rock and roll because they wanted to rock and roll.
every other band (and some of them were good) missed the mark terribly.
i would argue that no band has truly rocked since some time in the 80s, but i have trouble putting my finger on which one, where, when and why. it's a tough question. |

well becuase I am an 80's kids I didnt really listen to a lot of 70's ,music..
even though my mum was playing a lot of it, I was more into the music of the time.. Id say from 1983-1990 I can recall for the 80,s
I listen to a lot of genres and didnt really settle on just one..
but now as I am in my early 30's I still listen to 80;s music.. actually its what I listen to 80% of the time.. guess it just brings back so many memories. plus I feel the songs were written with a more positive message than today...
you cant beat some of the 80's rock ballads! nothing compares! |

You might want to add "The New York Dolls" to that list. |
