Thinking of heading to the beach this weekend - wondering if anyone knows what the current condition of the Taean area beaches is (site of oil spill last year). Went to Boryeung for mud fest - looking for easy access from Seoul but more chill/cheaper.

Any advice on getting from Seoul to Taean? Thinking of trying to take the train most of the way (towards boryeung) and then catch a local bus.

I can tell you the beaches are fine now. In April Mallipo looked fine, it'll def be swimmable by now. There is a bus directly from Seoul, but I don't know where to catch it, sorry.

Be sure to visit the village of Euihang (의항). It was the actual village that was given the fictional name of Seokpo (석포) in the ethnographic book, A Korean Village: Between Farm and Sea, by Dr. Vincent Brandt back in 1966. I visited there with my wife and son four years ago. I met with many villagers, including some who had known Brandt. I wrote a paper on it and just gave a UNDP-supported lecture to teachers from twenty-two different countries a week ago on the subject of rural entrepreneurship, using Euihang as my model.

I just went to a beach North of Mallipo last weekend and it was fine. Alternatively, have you been to any of the islands near Incheon? Deokjeokdo is very accessible and quite nice.

mallipo is fine, was there recently and it was quite full of people. the beach is closed technically now and the lifeguard was quite authoritarian about keeping people close to shore, but if that won't bother you then go.

if you're coming from seoul, why not visit the beaches on the eat coast 2-3 hours away. the water is crystal blue on sunny days, the beaches are fairly quiet now that the season is over and the atmosphere is quite relaxed...just a thought.
