Anyone know the name of a good place to stay for a night or two in that general area? |

not familiar with hotels in that area but I`m guessing they`d be more expensive than in other areas.
If you don`t get an answer on here it might be worth posting on gaijinpot.com |

Thanks but I think I may have stayed at this hostel a few years back and while the hostel itself was mostly fine the bathrooms were a little bit on the disgusting side. |

^ I used to work about a 10 minute walk from there, seems like a decent deal really (tiny single room, but only $80 is reasonable for the area). It's not actually that close to Ginza though, you gotta walk about 20 minutes past tsukiji and over a few bridges to get to the main shopping part (but it's a nice walk). Any hotels in the main area will be very pricey though (like the Seiyo etc). |

$80 seems about right, on the low low end.
There is Khoa San Hostel in Akasuka for $20/night...but you are in a hostel, and its not that close to Ginza.
Why Ginza anyways? I went there recently and it seems to just be a overpriced shopping district of the world's most expensive brands. Not much else going on there, from what I could tell.
It also seemed real quiet at night (at least everywhere I explored), so seems like your hotel could be just about anywhere else, and you could do whatever you wanted to do there during the day. |

Ginza's really nice if you got cash, there's lots of high end shopping and that, but also top notch restaurants. It's not so much on the main Ginza street (with the silver paint on it) I'm interested in, but the side streets and surrounding neighborhoods like closer to Shimbashi.
One of my favorite places to eat in Tokyo is at nearby Yurakucho, there's a whole bunch of yakitori and other restaurants under the train tracks. Very good.
The Ginza area also has a lot of good izakayas and expensive hostess clubs (been to the latter a few times with my ex-boss, couldn't really afford it on my own). Not really meant for the younger clubbing crowd though.
Above all it's a clean part of town. Much nicer than Ueno or other parts of the old downtown. |

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've decided to stay with a friend who lives close to that area.
I also found a bar in Ginza called 300 Yen bar and every drink there is only 300 Yen. From what I can make out this looks like a really good deal.http://gaijintonic.com/2007/04/08/300-yen-bar-in-ginza/ |

I am pissed I didn't know about this bar before I went on my trip last week. Hopefully, it's still there as it was posted over a year ago. There were a few bars I searched out that were no longer there.
In any event, have a great trip,

Thanks Ryan, I had a fantastic time in Japan and am I'm only sad that I couldn't have stayed in Japan a bit longer. There really is so much to see and do in Japan that I think I'd need a few years at least to see everything.
The bar in Ginza that I mentioned above is still going strong and beer really was only 300 (+15yen tax)yen a bottle. |
