my kindy hagwon which i detest, i mean really detest, want me to work staurday morning to help with some event another school are doing in the same franchise.
my contractual work hours are mon- fri, i objected saying its teaching and 44hours during the week are enough for me. they said they would pay extra. i then said id think about it (stupid i know as they always assume thats a yes)
i have the right to refuse as its not in my contract work on saturdays. granted it sounds like im a lazy shit, but my contract says i have to attend all staff meetings and workshops out of working hours-- it was only when i arrived here i discovered that these would be held monthly, on saturdays in deajon and seoul (i live in gwangju).
should i say i will only go if they add to my contract that i will not attend any staff meetings etc on my days off? or is that going too far? |

44 hours a week
Just call in sick if you really don't want to do it, your contract sounds pretty shitty sorry to say............ |

I don't think it's sneaky on your part at all. I think it's shitty on their part to ask you to come in on the weekends.
Where is the event? You said another school in the same franchise. If it's at another location, just say no, it's not on your ARC.....and you wouldn't want to break the law of course. If it is at the same place, then I don't see that you have much choice. If you're not worried about realtions with them, say no, and see how pissed they get. |

If you're asked to go out of town, I would at the least demand they pay for the transit time as well as the workshop/working-time if you're going out of city, not to mention the expenses for the journey. |

Yes, but only if the place he's going is on his ARC. A persons ARC card has a list of the places where he or she can legally work. Remember, the OP hates where he works. |

thanks for the advice, interesting points raised which i hadnt thought about.
its in another hagwon, but its in the same franchise, smallish one with about 20 branches.
the event is an english village day, where kids tke their parents in for the morning and buy stuff like pretend fast off, go to a pretend doctors etc. they want me to dress up like a *beep* and serve them etc.- i wouldnt technically be teaching, though make of it what you will.
i dont want to do it for obvious reasons, being on a saturday and im exhausted from working my ass off. but they could turn assy if i say no. i asked about the shitty days which take up 12 hours once a month in other cities for training, but my boss said no, i might be abe to miss one or two. i want to never have to go to them as its unreasonable.
my contract says that i may be designated to another branch in the franchise, and that i can only work for schools in this company.
i assume, almost know, that my arc will have only designated me to one school.
1 problem is that i have done this before in my 1st few weeks here, during the week at another school in the franchise. other teachers from other school in the franchise did it too. so im not sure if i can fall back on it.
the school are dodgy as they asked if i would teach at another schoo outside of the franchise about a month ago, i said no, then they sent a car to pick me up to bring me there, i had an argument and refused to do it.
id like to know if this is in fact illegal, as if it is i will say that i will only do it if they change my contract to say that any staff training must only happen during the working week.
if it is illegal, i wil do it for a few hours if i get out of these bulshit training days, if they dont let me off those then i have nothing to gain by doing it and can face the screaming in the knowedge that i have a perfectly good reason for refusing.
thanks |

You've set yourself up for an arse raping signing a contract requiring attendance outside of work hours.
44 hours of Kindy per week? At least tell us you're making 4 mil + a month for that...
I know there's a zillion crappy contracts out there, but you must have hunted high and low to find this lemon
You seriously think you can make it a year doing 44hrs of Kindy weekly?
How desperate are your circumstances? Quit, try to get released, if not go home till the visa expires then get a better contract - even basic entry level stuff is way ahead of this.
DO YOUR FREAKIN HOMEWORK NEXT TIME! |

I was going to say...44 hours of kindergarten. How on earth do you have the energy day in and day out? I hope that you are making at least 3.5 million or above considering how much money kindy hagwons make. They are making A LOT of money and I sure hope that you are getting a cut. If not, I would leave a job like that. They are using you big time. Life is too short for that nonsense. Good luck. |

Yeah, your boss doesn't write Korean law. This is still illegal and you're the one that'll get burnt, ignorant of the facts or not. Not matter how much reassurance your boss gives you, don't believe them!! You need to check yourself with immigration.
And 44hrs
There are easier ways to kill yourself. |

I will never take another job where I have to play "dress-up" again. It's the most demeaning thing you can do--sounds like the days of the court jester, who would dance and act for the king's amusement. I wish more people would just say "no!" to this kind of indignity. |

can someone please confirm that this is in fact illegal, clock is ticking and i dont want to put my foot in the brown stuff by saying its illegal when its not.
thanks
and yes i know my job sucks and i prob wont see the contract through, i shall enlighten you all, and any prospective teachers when i finish here by posting a report here and blacklisting the school for their numerous breaches of contract and generally unprofessional behaviour. however i will be here for a little while longer as i havnt seen all i came here to see. |

thanks,
update, what appearsed to be the owner of the other school arrived in, and my director was giving directions for her to pick me up in the morning, i was typing out worksheets and jumped up to say that i had discovered that this was illegal and it wouldnt interest me, they did the whole but others do it, its ok etc. i then said i dont benefit from this and you refused to let me off the staff training days once a month on saturdays which other fts in other branches dont have to do, gave her 1 more chnace to do it, she said no so i said i wasnt interested.
that said, i can see them planning another fast move, i.e telling me this afternoon they will still pick me up. i will refuse. was worth a try though, |

Refuse to do it, and make sure you're not at home on Saturday morning. |

after saying no because they refused to change my contract to state that any workshop of staff meeting shoud ony occur during the working week (so as to avoid 12 hour days in saturday to other places) i was told a car would be picking me up.
i refused again, sying that they didnt say yes to my request and that it was illegal. this sparked chaos. phone cals from other ex co teachers- one of which messed em about last time arguing with me after i refused to teach at another school that wasnt in my franchise, so i was defo saying no at this stage, because i dont trust her knowing if im doing something illegal. i said i would only do it if they ammend my contract.
then my employer yelled, shouted etc in korean, my response- i have 5 mins left till i finish today so yell all you like, then a phone call from my recruiter, based in korea, i explained my concerns, no one seemed to know if it was illegal, saying they were not sure, i said call immi heres the number and ask, they didnt obviously. major shouting match.
feeling iffy etc after all this commotion, would have been a better idea to just say yes in the first place.
but, its not in my contract, and its illegal,
i called immi but they are shut, can someone verify that its defo illegal please. |
