Hi all.
Nabiya Cat shelter is located in Itaewon, Seoul. We rescue and provide shelter for abandoned and abused cats, and also help with TNR (trap, neuter, release) programs for wild cats in Seoul. We currently have around 30 cats, who all live in a small apartment. The shelter is run solely by volunteers.

Last night, we rescued 8 kittens from a slaughter market in Bundang. Our shelter is now at capacity level. If you can help at all with fostering or adoption, please email Allie at [email protected] or PM me, or call either Allie @ 010.7711.0760 or Joon @ 010.2412.3141
To see pictures of the cats, search for "Nabiya" on Facebook.

* Lastly: We are always looking for committed volunteers to help at the shelter. Alternatively, you can make a cash donation.

Those are some adorable faces. I'll be 'round at some point...but adoption feels a bit irresponsible at the newbie level. Are there fostering opportunities?

yes, definitely. Give Allie or Joon a call, and they can tell you more about fostering.

I will be moving to the area in a week and a half. New apartment doesn't allow cats, but I'm interested in volunteering.

great! Allie and Joon run the place and donate so much of their own time and money, it would be nice to get more volunteers so that we can lighten the load a little bit.

Do you know why so many cats are named Butterfly (Nabi) in Korea? I've always sort of vaguely wondered.

Are you sure they're actually called 'Nabi'?

"Nabi" is used as a generic name to call any cat, whatever its name is. Always in the form of "Nabi-ya". I think most cats have another name apart from being called "Nabi". It's like calling your dog "dog" or "pooch" or something.

I believe there's a kids song called "Nabi-ya" about a cat as well.. that might be where it comes from. Or maybe the song came after the nickname had been adopted..

Hmm, possibly. I have a friend whose cat's name is Nabi, but it could be generic. Other friends of mine have a cat called 야웅이, or literally "thing that yaoongs" which I know is generic. Like someone back home calling their cat "Kitty"
