|

[REPOST: my last post on this got messed up with zero actual replies...]
Ignoring recruiters who want to work with applicants from overseas (i.e the ones on this site) - how can I go about finding a job in Korea when I'm actually there? I want to be able to set up plenty of interviews for maybe 2 weeks' job hunting.
What websites have I totally failed to find?
Are there recruiter offices I can just walk into?
Should I just get addresses and walk into the school ? (I may well do this with CDI etc)
I'll probably end up going for a Hagwon, but could I apply in-country for PS?
Sorry it's a repost but any help would be much appreciated... |

Hey there. I applied in-country in February and landed a job at a really good hagwon within two days (I consider myself lucky though because I don't think that's the norm). I strictly used eslcafe.com and applied to all the positions and schools that interested me. You should know what hours you're looking to work, what grades you'd like to teach (kindy or no kindy), where you want to work, etc....that way you can weed out the job offers that you wouldn't be happy with in the first place.
Make sure you have all your documents WITH YOU (background check, transcripts, original degree) as that will be a major factor now for a school hiring you. If I were you I'd make it a big selling point, "In Seoul looking for teaching position, have all my documents ready for processing!"
You should go check out the school and apartment, ask to talk to former foreign teachers from the school, that way you'll get the most honest opinions. Yeah just go for it, send out your resume/cover letter/recent photo to a bunch of schools on the daily and you will definitely get offers coming in left and right. Take your time when choosing!
Btw, you will NOT have to go back to your home country and interview for the E-2 visa. I had a couple schools tell me this when I was applying, but it's not true. You can get your degree verified here through an agency and then you just hop a flight to Japan to pick up your visa once it's approved.
To sum up: yes it can be done, know what you want and be picky, do your research. |

I didn't strictly use eslcafe, but the job I ended up getting did advertise here. There was no recruiter involved (except the ones I turned down because they were too slow). My job search was five days, including a weekend.

This is very very true. I had everything with me at the interview and I know it made a big difference. |

I didn't bargain hard, but didn't have to as I was happy with everything in my contract and had done some research on the school.
Yes they reimbursed me for the flight I had already taken here....you should not sign a contract for a school if they're not willing to reimburse you for your flight. That's BS. |

Why are recruiters more interested in people who are outside of Korea? |

They are only more interested in people outside of Korea if the start date is far enough away I think. Plenty of schools need teachers ASAP so there is also a high demand for teachers in country.
It's easier for a school to legally hire someone outside of the country because of the visa process. If they hire immediately within country, the teacher may have to work illegally for the first month or so while the visa is being issued (which it may not even be approved), and there are slightly more hoops to jump through, but if they really need a teacher asap..... |

I quit after 6 months so technically I didn't fly myself here. The last school paid. The new school will pay for a visa run.
I didn't bargain either. |

Have you had an E2 visa before?
If not, you can't do it as you need to attend an embassy interview in your home country.

I haven't had an E-2 before. (However, I have heard of people who have done it this way)
Draz and lorenchristopher - did you both pick up your first E-2 this way? |

This is wrong. As I said before, you CAN get a first-time E2 from within Korea...and just make a trip to Japan (you don't HAVE to go to your home country). I know, I did it earlier this year.
You have to get your original degree verified at the Korean Academic Verification Agency here first, and then you skip the home-country interview step. |

No, I got my first E2 visa this year in my own country, after the new regs were in place. I'd better not have to do an interview in Canada! |

I also got my first E-2 without returning to my home country. I had it issued in Bangkok after having my degree verified by the KCUE. |

Potential teachers outside Korea need more help finding their first job. They usually pick only one recruiter, get a job, the recruiter gets paid.
Job hunters in Korea tend to use more than one recruiter, they also follow their own job leads. The recruiter faces a high probablilty that although the teacher WILL get a job, the recruiter will not be the one placing the teacher, so he will get NO commission.

Can anyone provide any decent leads for direct contact with school/hagwons in Korea? Websites?
Going through recruiters via email is hell..... |
