Since 1984 the drinking age has been 21. The law is up for renewal next year.
A coalition of college and university presidents has apparently signed a petition decrying the law, saying it perpetuates clandestine binge drinking and is both ineffective and unenforceable.

One more question too for the yanks--did you presonally wait until you were 21 to drink? Do you know anybody who did?

Do we even have a national drinking age? When I was 18 we drank 3.2 beer in Colorado but in my home state (Iowa) the age was 21. At one point I vaguely remember talking about Iowa lowering the age to 19 but I don't remember if they ever did it. I'm so far past legal age that I haven't paid much attention to it.

21 is the legal drinking age in every state of the union. Louisiana and Ohio were the last two states to hold out but they buckled under relatively quick.

Without question, this law should be changed. I don't know of any nation other than Muslim nations and India which require such an old age to buy alcohol.

It certainly doesn't prevent underage drinking. Heck, you can smoke when your 18 (I think). Absolutely stupid law.

Teach responsibility. It is the only way to go.

When I was 18, hell yes. Now that I'm 27, hell no.

Getting alcohol underage was half the fun. Also, its a way for people to climb the social ladder. The guy who can get alcohol on a regular basis gets cheerleader poontang.

In NZ we lowered it to 18. Pretty soon there was an increase of 15-17 year olds getting drunk. Now it's looking likely to be raised again.

Yeah, its 18 at home in Ireland too and there's never been a drink problem there Wink

Same as in New Zealand, there are big problems with 13-15 year olds getting wasted. Raising the age isnt the solution I dont think though.
In fairness , they are stricter about requesting ID in stores now. when I was younger they'd basically serve anybody who could see over the counter!
I remember when I was at University all the exchange students from the US were amazed that there were loads of bars on campus. Apparently they don't in the States? Couldn't imagine that tbh^^

There should be graduated levels. Say at 14-15 wine/beer with a guardian at a restaurant or at home is ok. At 18 hard liquor can be bought, but you can't go to bars etc etc.

I enjoy the serenity of bars in the US compared to Canada. The 18-21 male demographic are bloody annoying when they're loaded.

Either they lower the drinking age or they raise the age you have to register with selective services.

A country that can send you to die but says you're not allowed to drink before they do so is twisted.

It seems like an archaic law to me, but I've been drinking since I was about 14.

First ever drink was a couple of cans of harp left in the fridge by the family I was baby sitting for.

First ever drunk was a quarter bottle of vodka, 4 cans of harp and a small bottle of Thunderbird. I'm surprised my mum didn't beat me more the next day.

I have to say I turned out fine and with absolutely no drink related problems whatsoever. Laughing

I also got ID'ed in New York by a Chinese guy when I tried to buy some beers. "27, you're 27?".

I think the age of consent for EVERYTHING (drinking, sex, voting, etc.) should be 16. That's not going to happen anytime soon. This law isn't going to change either. It would be interesting to see Obama come out and say vote me in and I'll lower the drinking age to 18. Won't happen because he's playing the usual games, but it might bring out the youth vote. There won't even be any debate over this, they'll just extend the law, but it should be 18.
