I bought a 500Gig WD hard drive and MBox case on sunday. Put 'er all together, plug it into CPU and nothing. The cpu recognizes it when I plug it in and it is listed in the device manager, but unable to open or explore the drive since it doesn't show up on "my computer". Talked to one friend and he had no idea since all his HDs worked when plugged in. Tried a few other things but to no avail. Any constructive comments or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Guessing its a USB drive right? did u get any drivers with it, or software. may pay to install it if you did.

What does device manager list it as? - if it doesnt list your drive specifically, it may only be recognising the USB board inside, and not the drive. Check the connections are solid.

Can you hear the drive spinning up when u plug it in? - might be a dud drive

Any lights etc that tell you its on? might not be getting enough power

Is it powered seperately, or does it rely on USB2.0 for power? usb power might not be working

Are your USB ports powered? might need external power source.

Id take it apart and put it back together, most likely id say a connection is weak and not being made, or its not getting enough power to the drive thruogh the USB.

installed software and the drive doesn't come in the software. Under device manager it comes up as WD something something. I can populate it and the free disk space comes back around 4.7 gigs. The MBox lights up but not sure if the drive makes noise when plugged in. It is a 3.5 inch and has separate power supply. Will try your suggestions. Hopefully not a dud.

Thanks

This might sound strange but did you partition and format it yet?

Hmmm... actually no. Am I able to do that through device manager? Because that is the only place where it pops up. It also has no assigned drive letter either (or at least one I can find). I could try that if I could get a hold on the drive so to speak.

Thanks

I assume you are using some flavor of winXP?

-> Start
-> control panel
-> performance and maintenance
-> administrative tools
-> double click on "computer management"
-> in the right hand window, double click on "storage"
-> again in the right hand window, double click on "disk management"

-> scroll down until you find the blank drive.
-> Right click on it and use the wizard to activate it, then partition it, then format it.

It will take about an hour or so to format 500 gigs.

Alternatively:
-> Start
-> help and support
-> search for "partition and format"

And as a last resort, get a techie friend to partition and format it for you. Probably only cost you a beer or 3. Smile
