Not old news. This is a new development.

Some Korean consulates in Canada (Toronto, for example) required this from the beginning.

Others (e.g., Vancouver) did not.

It was NOT an Immigration requirement until very recently.

Now that you mention it, I went back and checked: the regulations on the HiKorea site say they were last updated on July 23rd. So it's not exactly breaking news, but it is a change, at least for those who lived outside the jurisdiction of the Toronto consulate.

I suspect the people who will be most affected by this are those Canadians trying to renew from within Korea and are sending away for their CRC. The Canadian Embassy web site outlines how to obtain an RCMP check and how to get it notarized at the Embassy, but mentions nothing about the VSS:

I was at the BUsan consulate today, getting my ID notarized. I overheard the clerk refusing to accept some woman's Vulnerable Sector Check which was processed through the RCMP.

The Immigration Borg website, in their supreme ignorance, has posted a York Regional Police Vulnerable Persons check as the only acceptable document.

The woman at the embassy, having a more thorough RCMP Vulnerable Persons check, was denied.

Has anyone else recently and successfully used another agent for this check?

Please someone tell me I don't need to fly to Canada to do a VSS. I signed my next contract a couple of months ago (renewal with EPIK) I understood at the time I only had to get a new CRC. Are they now saying I have to get a VSS? If so, where the hell do I get it? I haven't lived in Canada since 1989.

So once more for the daft (me).

To renew my contract with EPIK, I need a CRC and a VSS?
If yes to the VSS, where can I do it?

I just talked to the RCMP today and they said I needed to send my finger prints to Ottawa which takes about 8 weeks then I can get my crc and vss.

They also said every police station has different rules, so it is best to search around. What a joke this whole thing is. Check out the other thread which says that Winnepeg is an easy place to get the search even if you are not from there.
