I'm in Vancouver and I'd like to access some money from my KB account. My card has the Maestro thing on it if that means anything. Or am I screwed? Is this just another of the restrictions put on foreigners Korean bank cards?

All informed opinions are appreciated.
Thank you,
Jameson

Try it.

Costs you nothing to walk into a Bank of Montreal branch and try.

If it works, then you are gold (service fees apply).

If it doesn't, then you are just one more foreigner caught in the bank policy of no access to foreigners and there is no cost.

You have about a 30% chance that it will work.

Quite often, if it does work, it is still tied in to the operating hours of the korean banks - so check the timing of your withdrawal attempts.

Also, try a few different banks as that can also make a difference.
But, yes, no guarantee it will work.

I never did understand why ATMs here would stop working at certain hours if the whole system is electronic--do they unplug the database?. I don't really have any problems with this now, but there were a few times when i first got here that i was really worried about having enough money to get back from a night on the town in Seoul.

It was once explained to me this way: When their ATMS were open all night long married businessmen out on the soju and juicy bar girls, drunkenly headed to the machines and withdrew significant portions of their family's savings. The cut off times were installed to prevent some men from ruining their families.

Perhaps unlikely, but definitely something about that story that can make it believable.

I would be interested to know if it's possible too. Is there somewhere in Toronto where it can be done?

IF you have one of the international network logos on the back (like cirrus) and the word international on the top-front corner try a B of M.

If you don't, then you are SOL.

If it works, do post what you find.
