A U.S. counterterrorism official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that "finding bin Laden has always been a priority" and that targeting al Qaeda bases is based on actionable intelligence. However, he added that the November elections in the U.S. have renewed a sense of urgency to capture the terrorist leader. "Any period of transition, like the upcoming election, can be seen as a potential vulnerability," he said.

| A little bit cynical, a lot desperate. With things relatively quiet in Iraq--meaning no recent disasters, the war is off the front pages and the GOP needs something to shift attention back to their only issue. They have exactly 2 months to do it or they can kiss the Election of '08 goodbye. |

I read an analysis that said that ther are rumors that AQ plans to hit soft targets in the US around the time of 9/11 or the elections but that there has been no warnings put out by the US government.
Maybe this is a way to shake the tree and cause a little disruption in the region so the AQ leaders are more concerned with their personal health than with ordering any strikes in the US.
Though, considering the Pakistan government doesnt control the tribal lands, they cant really complain if some one else attacks that region as its not really part of pakistan. I mean if the Paki's could look after thier own back yard, there would be no excuse for any one else attacking that region.
By the way, they bitch and moan when the US kills civilians, they dont seem to show much concern when they do. |

What was their analysis, or your understanding, of why they would do that?
Violence around election time seems to benefit the more hawkish party, which seems to against their interest.
On the other hand it's easy to start rumors which some may believe will have a similar effect, "Wag the Dog"-style. |
