How common is it for a school to not pay the expenses for a visa run (plane or boat fare, hotel, etc)?
It seems to me that this is extremely uncommon and I am starting to get the impression that my school isn't going to pay for it. This isn't certain but, who knows.
Really, I just want to know how common this is and what most of you would do if this happened. Would you leave the school or just pay for everything yourself?

| this is a hagwan, and i think its a pretty good one. but i had other expenses in moving here and i think asking me to pay for a visa run is just too much. i dont want to quit but this seems excessive. |

You should have discussed that before signing the contract.
My school (hagwon) is paying for my flight only. |

| I always insist upon airfare, hotel, food and transportation and spending money. If the school won't pay then I don't sign. |

I have NEVER paid for a visa run - and I have done several.
I don't know anyone who has ever paid for their visa run - and I know (literally) hundreds of people who have done one.
It has always (at a minimum) had the airfare paid for by the hakwon.
Usually they toss in an extra 100k for your expenses on the trip (since the overnight stay is mandatory).

yeah, this is what i figured. i was told once that the hagwan legally had to pay for the visa run. that seems unlikely but i think i just assumed it was a given. there is no mention of it in the contract, so im not sure how to deal with it. |

Because of some last minute screw-ups and not wanting to risk paying another $200 date change fee for my ticket to come to Korea, I arrived before my E2 was ready. Within days I had to make the visa run. Since the school was reimbursing for the ticket (plus the $200 fee) and would advance my reimbursement to pay for the run, I agreed to pay it.
I mean, have you heard of schools paying for the flight to Korea AND a run for the same visa? Would any school do that? |

| I paid for my own when starting my uni job. I think it's pretty standard. |

My last school did. Including flight, hotel, food and transportation costs.
It was the school that wanted me there so soon, and because they didn't want to wait for me to get the visa in Canada, it was their own choice to send me on a visa run. Therefore, of course they should pay for it. Of course, I believe it was mentioned in the contract too.
As to paying for my own visa run.. I think it would have to depend on the job and the situation. |

| I paid for one about four years ago, but the reason I had to do one in the first place was because I screwed up the paperwork and didn't get my visa on time. I didn't really mind. It was more or less a vacation. |

I've had two schools pay for my flight to get to Korea as well as the subsequent visa run to Japan. I'd never pay out of my own pocket for a visa run. The schools here are desperate for teachers, if they won't pay, go elsewhere. Make them pay for your flight over and, if needed, the visa run. |

The school says they will pay transportation expenses, nothing else. Hotel, etc, is somehow my responsibility.
How would you deal with this?
Ive already moved in, I dont feel like moving again. The owner obviously sees an opportunity here because i dont like conflict or negotiation.
Im just so tired of nit-picking over trivial nonsense. |

I would pay for a visa run, but only under the following conditions:
1) I choose the country
2) I choose the amount of time I spend there
I'd go to Thailand for a couple of weeks. |
