Note that W. Bush and D. Cheney will miss the Republican Convention to monitor this situation. That is because, unlike the Democrats and their obsession with S. Palin's personal life, Republicans place country first.

| Is that all you have got? S. Palin's sex and motherhood and Katrina, from three years ago? |

Exactly my point. 3 years later, and the levies are still unrepaired.
"Republicans place country first" Yeah, right. Perhaps they don't consider Louisiana a part of the US? |

Obama will mobilize volunteers for Gustav
From the pool report:
Sen. Obama gathered the pool outside after services at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He told us that his camapaign plans to mobilize its huge e-mail list of supporters to volunteer or send money once the impact of Gustav becomes apparent and authorities know better what kind of help is needed. He said his campaign is coordinating with local authorities.
"We can activate an e-mail list of a couple million people who want to give back," he said. "I think we can get tons of volunteers to travel down there if it becomes necessary."
Your pooler asked him if McCain's visit now is appropriate.
His response: "A big storm like this raises bipartisan concerns and I think for John to want to find out what's going on is fine."
"The thing that I always am concerned about in the middle of a storm is whether we're drawing resources away from folks on the ground because the Secret Service and various security requirements, sometimes it pulls police, fire and other departments away from concentrating on the job."
"I'm assuming that where he went that wasn't an issue. Were going to try to stay clear of the area until things have settled down and then we'll probably try to figure out how we can be as helpful as possible." |

You sound like those welfare-abusing dimwits who waited out Katrina and then were surprised when the place went to hell afterwards. Don't crucify the government when all you had to do was to point your Impala north for a few days. No sense of self-sufficiency. The result and curse of a socialist state. |

From an actual resident in NOLA:
"...it isn't stupidity that had people stay. I had a lot of friends who stayed or originally planned to stay until their partners asked them to leave. I am not from here so I was more nervous than locals prior to K and Ivan and when every storm that has threatened to come your way for 30 years has either changed directions or not done any real damage, your experience tells you that you should be ok this time around. That is what happened. In addition to the fact that this city is incredibly poor and most people do no own cars or have the extra money need to evacuate. Do you know that a large number of people in this city get paid once a month, that day generally being 30th or 31st....I for one was dead broke when I left for that reason alone...luckily, I had a credit card. The city does not offer any type of evacuation assistance for the poor, infirm or elderly.
My office was looted and you know what, a few items like stereos were taken, but so was all the water and dry food in the office b/c the neighborhood knew we had water coolers. I could give a shit if someone loots a liquor store. If I am stuck in unimaginable conditions with no foreseeable way out in the near future, I'm sure as shit going to drink.
I highly doubt the majority of people who stayed thought...hmm....let me stay and risk my life and health so I can get a free TV and tell the government they suck. I know far too many people who stayed for reasons beyond what the media has led you to believe."
AND THIS
"No one here has faith that the levees are ready for anything. The are areas where there are still gaps in the levees and the MRGO (Mississippi River Gulf Outlet) issue hasn't been resolved. It's sort of crazy. I know national news says we are ready but the local news is very different. A friend just walked into work and said the news last night was just story after story about how NOT ready every thing is, floodgates, levees, pumping stations etc."

27% of NOLA residents do NOT own a car.

| It is absolutely impossible that both sides will not politicize, in some way, this looming event. Thankfully the storm seems to be weakening and will not have landfall right ontop of the French Quarter. |

September 1 should go down in Dave's history as the first time Gopher posted a joke. |

No joke. Also, add J. McCain, the next president of the United States to that list...
| Quote: |
ST. PAUL, Minn. - John McCain tore up the script for his Republican National Convention on Sunday, ordering the cancellation of all but essential opening-day activities as Hurricane Gustav churned toward New Orleans.
"This is a time when we have to do away with our party politics and we have to act as Americans..." |
Too bad that all the other side can contribute to this trying time is a sickening stream of apparently baseless and bitter internet-based allegations against S. Palin as a woman and a mother...

I don't give a rats ar$e about Palin. She's not big news outside the US. Besides, she, & any reference to her, are way off topic. The heading of this post was 'Gustav'.

But to give credit, where credit is due, GWB has preemptively allowed Loiusiana, Mississippi & Alabama to be declared disaster areas, to avoid a repeat of the inertia seen post Katrina. |

| The reason Bush and Cheney will not be at the convention is because their presence is not wanted, and would be detrimental to the McCain campaign. No one wants to be reminded that Bush and McCain are cut from the same cloth. |
